American talent is leaving the country and the exodus is no longer being offset by waves of foreign skilled workers and entrepreneurs - all due to its restrictive immigration rules and the rising economies of other countries.
Not that long ago, the United States was a magnet for foreign talent and hard workers. It offered the highest potential for success among countries for digital startup founders.
Scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who were among the best in their fields gathered here.
They are now being denied visas.
The United States is in dire need of immigrant entrepreneurs. The economy struggles and yet technological advancements allow for a renaissance.
But in this day and age, America is less necessary to the success of these business people.
We need to loosen up entry requirements to get back to some sort of equilibrium between supply and demand.
With focus on US policy, she probes and demands us to join her in the movement to shine the light on the issue at hand and what we stand to lose if immigration laws are not changed.
She accomplishes this by not only blending history but also providing real life examples today about the importance of the Startup Visa if US desires to continue staying relevant in the world. Examples include Alibaba (think Amazon, eBay, Paypal combined) - the Chinese ecommerce behemoth with market valuation surpassing that of Walmart or India quickly turning into the de facto as incubator and technology hub.
Reality is that entrepreneurship and innovation is happening all around the world. Many of these brilliant entrepreneurs would reside in the US if it weren’t for the current immigration laws. The call for a policy change is as much about increasing job creation as it is about reviving US as the innovation powerhouse; a place to reside in -- inviting top talent from around the world and removing the impasse these talented and ambitious entrepreneurs face today.
What struck me most was that the author, also an immigrant, lawyer and entrepreneur draws directly from her own personal experience and of her clients to write this very critical book. She makes a compelling argument that is hard not to take to heart because she experienced it first hand. I read this book from start to finish and it inspired me to be an advocate. As a technology consultant having worked on global projects, the change she is advocating for seems like a no-brainer to me and the urgency is very real.
