Describe your product in 3 words.
innovative; functional; plastic-free
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
inspiration and innovation seem to go hand-in-hand. I had my a-ha moment while making a sandwich. as a busy mother of three, I have been making school lunches for years, and every time I packed her kids’ sandwiches in disposable plastic baggies, I’d think there’s got to be a better way. aside from the millions of pounds of plastic that goes into landfill each year, I was concerned about the effects of petroleum-based plastics on my family. as the founder of international lifestyle brand modern-twist, I was already using pure silicone to create sustainable housewares and children’s products—why not design a reusable bag made of silicone? why not, indeed! after more than two years of rigorous product development, the world’s first fully functional, self-sealing non-plastic bag was born: stasher.
What makes your product special?
stasher, the world’s first—and only—self-sealing, airtight, non-plastic bag in the world. it’s made of pure platinum silicone, so it’s a healthy alternative that’s safe for people and the planet. but best of all, stasher can do so much more than plastic bags and containers. It can be used in the freezer, microwave and dishwasher!
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
The most exciting part has been the innovation behind stasher and developing the pinch press seal technology. We are so excited to offer the world an alternative to plastic baggies that not only functions better than plastic, but also eliminates all the negative impacts on your health and the environment. It is a grand idea, one that I hope will inspire us all to rethink plastic!

The Stasher bag protects the content from leaking or encroaching spillage, which wipes away easily. I filled it 1/3 with water and placed it upside-down for 4 hours, and the bag did not leak. However, I would not use this to carry around liquid, which can slosh around and weaken the seal - please use a proper jar or bottle for that. The Stasher is not designed for carrying liquid.
Needless to say, the seal is great and easy to operate, even for school-aged kids. It is flexible but keeps its form. This is perfect for juicy cut fruits (with a long fork if eating out of the bag) or grapes. I never put grapes in zipped reusable bags, in case the those bags and the grapes inside get crushed, thus making a mess inside and out. Because this one is slightly stiffer, fruits, along with items like crackers and pretzel sticks are better-protected.
The 7" Stasher is great for small sandwiches. Because the bag's opening is only a little over 4.5", you can't fit sandwiches made with large bread slices or thick sandwiches. I'd say no bigger than a nut-butter and jelly sandwich of 4.5" by 5". The bread's width in my photo is 4.5", with the Stasher's opening at the top. However, for optimal fit inside, I'd turn the bread 90-degrees to insert it easier. It looks like the widest part should be parallel to the opening, but it works better perpendicularly due to the deceptively wide-looking top appropriate for carrying small items that need to grabbed. (It's geometry.)
It washes fine in the dishwasher but can take a while to dry, depending on your dishwasher's drying technology. Be sure to straddle the bag across a few tines to keep the bag open during the wash.
This is also great as a travel bag. I haven't gone through airport security where they still want a quart-sized plastic zip-top bag for those without TSA Pre-Check privilege, but I expect this to be acceptable. Also, at NFL football games.
I like the bag but do wish it had a larger opening to allow larger sandwiches to be carried to maximize its space, but maybe the smaller opening was a design requirement to ensure corner stability - I don't know. I appreciate a silicone bag as another reusable method to carry small amounts of food or sandwiches. The seal is fantastic.
I am so disappointed to say that I had to throw these pouches out. I had been putting them through the dishwasher and then letting them air dry inside out. But I realized one day as I was packing my son's school lunch that the inside corners are growing mold! I've attached a picture of it. It's impossible to clean in these side crevices, so I ended up throwing all of the pouches away. Such a waste, and I'm sad because I genuinely loved these.
ORIGINAL REVIEW - 12/03/16 (5 stars)
We've been using reusable snack bags for a while now. We have a couple sets of Art of Lunch Designer Reusable Sandwich and Snack Bag by Danny Ivan (Portugal), Set of 3 - Pass This On and a few sets of Itzy Ritzy Snack Happens Mini Reusable Snack and Everything Bag, Fresh Bloom, Mini. I like both brands--though they each have their pros and cons. (I don't like Art of Lunch's zippers, but I like the thinner, lighter material they are made of. Itzy Ritzy's have great zippers and I like the extra lining, but they take forever to dry.)
I wasn't sure if I would like these Stasher silicone bags--mostly because I was worried they would be bulky or smell chemical-y or leak or be difficult to clean. But, actually, the bags are great! I have two of the bigger size and two of the smaller. The bigger size is, well, big. You can see from the attached pictures that they take up a lot of precious real estate in my son's Wildkin Green Camo Lunch Box. But the bags are still soft enough to squish around (and even bend), so they've actually been fine.
The bags are completely sealed when closed. No juice--from, say, a few squished grapes--leaks out. I've even packed salami slices in the smaller bags, thinking maybe the stink would be hard to get out, but it wasn't. I just run the bags through the dishwasher when my son comes home from school and they are good as new.
The only slight drawback is that I usually have to manually dry the bags once they get out of the dishwasher. They will eventually dry on their own if I just set them out to air dry, but they don't stay open easily, so it takes longer. I usually end up drying them with a paper towel. But that's a minor complaint. I still am really happy with the bags overall.
