UPDATE: The bike rides great as a single speed (even with only a front brake). It's lighter than I imagined and pretty nimble. The ride is really nice since it is steel. I don't think the seat is going to be very comfortable though. I will probably be getting a Brooks. I would've given it 4 stars because of the seat, but I took another because the parts box was missing. I will also want to get a 52-tooth crainring for higher top speed, but that will come after getting a rear brake.
I will have to get used to riding it as a fixie. It is really different since this is my first fixie. I need to build up my leg muscles for braking. If I had the pedal with straps, it would probably easier to learn and still be a fixie, but riding with clipless is really difficult to get used to. I will probably ride fixie on the weekends until I learn to ride it, so that way I don't crash on the way to work.
Very happy with purchase so far.
The bike itself is fairly decent. They're not top-of-the-line or anything, but it's a good value. My girlfriend uses The Ranger — which we also got from Amazon — as her day-to-day bike.
The huge problem though: the packaging. I'm not sure whether State or Amazon is at fault here, but both the bikes we've purchased have come in torn boxes with gaping holes and major missing parts. Missing saddles, pedals, small parts, etc. It's a major pain.
State Bicycle was nice enough to send us spare parts for free, but they feel fairly sure Amazon is at fault for treating the packages like crap in the warehouse. If you want one of these bikes, it's definitely a decent value, but I'd purchase directly from State Bicycle Company instead.
