About the Author
Alain Nu’s life-long passion for mysterious and unknown realms was formed in his early childhood. Growing up in San Francisco in the late 1960’s, Alain was exposed to the world of fortunetellers, street performers and other practitioners of the mystery arts. Largely shunned by his peers for somehow being different, he turned his natural desire to connect with others inwards. As a youth, his interest in the unknown manifested in anything he could research, and/or get away with... basement seances, UFO clubs, and playfully testing he and his friends’ psychic abilities. Eventually, Alain’s interest turned towards the field of mentalism... parlor demonstrations of ESP, mind reading and telekinesis. The path on which he found himself seemed to be his only true calling, and Alain came to the moment of decision on which his entire future depended. To Alain, there was no question that he was already doing exactly what he needed to do. Against tremendous odds, he built a career that eventually brought him to headline at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and star in four hour-long television specials, "The Mysterious World of Alain Nu," which aired on TLC and international television. Always trying to keep up with the latest studies on the brain and consciousness, Alain’s interest was piqued by recent findings linking quantum physics and serious parapsychological research. Invigorated by the implications of these parallel fields of study, Alain’s role became clearer than ever: To develop programs that introduce ordinary people to their own extraordinary abilities. He gained a wide reputation for entertaining very sophisticated audiences with his uncanny demonstrations that blur the line between science and the mysteries of unexplained phenomena. "To watch him is to throw out all the rules of physics. Time and space are malleable in Nu's deft hands," said Eric Brace of "The Washington Post." Alain Nu is "the modest explorer, the gracious and kind tour guide leading the audience into investigations and ultimately mysterious realms," says Donn Murphy, Ph.D., Executive Director of The National Theatre. Alain Nu utilizes these untold powers to foretell our actions, reveal our unspoken thoughts and create seemingly impossible phenomena. "Nothing is impossible as long as you know how to adjust your perception," says Alain Nu. "Think about it. With just our thoughts and words as tools of visualization, we have the beginnings of untold power."

I'm certainly not aware of a better intro to so many facets of the mind's surprising powers and their relations to strange phenomena. On top of that, Nu is a practicing mentalist/magician, so he naturally comes from a much more skeptical (and less gullible!) place than most authors who delve into these realms. What you get as a result is a much more even-handed treatment of mysterious phenomena than your standard New Age foray; and, what's more, State of Mind contains a handful of actual mentalist routines that you can use to amaze your friends and colleagues.
There's something for everyone here, really, and while I've never seen Nu's act (he used to headline at Ceasar's and had a show on TLC), I really want to now.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book. It will leave you feeling more positive, more open-minded, more wonder-filled; and, if you're willing to try out the techniques he suggests, you can spread those qualities yourself.
Mr. Nu is a true legend in the mentalism/mind reading arena, and this book leads the reader into his intriguing world in a highly compelling way. It's quite a journey, I must say. This is a tough book to put down---I challenge you to resist reading another chapter...and another...and another in sequence.
Whether you're an amateur/professional mentalist, an aficionado of the art form, or a complete newbie, you'll find "State of Mind" utterly fascinating..
