The Station: A Novel (The Eta Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 419 ratings

When confronted with death, would you have the courage to leave the only home you’ve ever known?

The Delta Space Station isn’t just a rundown spacecraft skirting the edge of Earth’s atmosphere - it’s Eta Shepard’s home. It’s the only place she’s ever known. It’s her whole world.

And she’s desperate to escape it.

Today, on her eighteenth birthday, Eta will begin her day on the Delta the same way she begins every day - working to keep the aging spacecraft from falling out of orbit. But by the day’s end, something will happen that will turn Eta’s world upside down and forever change her future… and the future of her space station.

Alexandros (Ale) Bakas is a mid-level engineer at NASA, working to re-establish a manned space program after a devastating world war left the Earth and its resident human population in tatters. When a rogue distress signal featuring a strange call sign is picked up by a newly launched set of communication satellites, Ale is put up to the task of finding its origin.

Eta and Ale’s worlds are about to collide in a way neither of them saw coming. And even though they’re separated by hundreds of kilometers and all of Earth’s atmosphere, their bond grows to the point of unbreakable - which is a good thing because they’ll need that incredible bond to save Eta’s life before the Delta finally falls.

What would it be like to be alone in space? Read the book and you'll get a good idea. Good story, good characters. Moves at a good pace. Ending wraps up a bit quick for me but it works. To the author, no need to introduce characters more than once thank you.

I absolutely LOVED this book and had a hard time putting it down. It tells a very poignant and emotional journey of a girl named Eta who was born and raised on a space station. I laughed, I cried, and I turned page after page and didn't want it to end. <3

I nearly stopped reading this novel after the first chapter, thinking it might be intended for a younger person… but something made me continue reading it. This story has a number of similarities to the movie “Gravity”, but it’s not a duplication of that story. I am 73 years old and have read for pleasure and mental stimulation all of those years, yet I’ve never before found a book that so beautifully touches on so many emotions from a wholly unique viewpoint. This novel is a MUST READ, period! I bet you will treasure the last two sentences and continue to hold them as close to your heart as I have. I cannot wait to begin book #2…

Very good story line. Not your normal space related story. Eta and her mom seemed very real and their characters really held the story together. Good ending.

I enjoy reading sci-fi written by a woman... One of my favorite authors is a woman who's books have kept me enthralled for a long time. They paint a picture that is a different delight than most of the other authors I read. I'll continue with book 2 and if she keeps on writing I'll probably keep on reading. It would be fun to see if she climbs up my "favorite author" ladder... there's plenty of room at the top! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars What a find!!!

A random click whilst surfing sci fi podcasts led me to this amazing book. It manages to combine easily digested ’techy detail’ with a superbly twisting plot and above all introduces you to some richly crafted characters that become friends immediately, I found myself as concerned for their welfare as I am with that of my friends & family during this most challenging year of pandemic isolation & loss.
In the past 10 years or so the only novels that have achieved this level of immediate character engagement for me have been the Ketty Jay books by Chris Wooding and the Expanse Series by James Corey (pen name)
And alongside Hiero’s Journey by Sterling E Lanier & Shipwreck by Charles Logan this will become a book I know I’ll revisit every few years.
I feel this book is crying out to be made into a movie or TV series to ensure Nu, Ale, Nix & Eta gain the wider audience they so deserve.
I would add.... my wife has never read a sci fi book in 37 years of marriage but is already a third of the way through.... in a day.

Best space, tech, survival story I’ve ever read. Exciting in places, heart wrenching sad in others with a tension that kept me turning page after page until the end.
