Editorial Reviews
Review
"...provides a very convenient source for formulas and tables to compute power in some common analyses....the excellent writing allows lending the book and being comfortable in expecting the scientist to use the book for power calculations with little assistance."
―Technometrics
"This is the second edition of work that has become a minor classic. It ranks as a required reference for research grant applications in the social sciences....It provides a much-needed reference for those not as numerically proficient as many JASA readers....overall the book is clearly written."
―Journal of the American Statistical Association
"...provides readers who apply statistical analyses to their data with descriptions of the rationale for each of several procedures as well as the steps in computation separately and does so in a clearly written style."

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2018This is the bible for research in the behavioral sciences -- THE place to start learning. Superb explanation of effect size - how and why to calculate it and how to deal with unexpected problems with the data. Also, I return to it often as a reference. It does NOT have the latest information on new approaches and methods that have been developed in the last 10 - 15 years. But I go back to it to get oriented when I get stuck in trying to learn a new method (something I read in a journal or something I encounter in software packages). Before I studied this book (first ed., early 1980's) I thought that statistical significance was all that mattered for successful research studies. This opened my eyes to the importance of effect size. NOTE -- this error of omission (reporting significance but not effect size) is still being made in today's journals(!!!), maybe a little less frequently. People in a hurry still look mostly at the mean value of data sets, not the range (or other aspects) of the distribution.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2016This is an amazing book that is not appreciated enough. Finally broke down and actually spent the money to buy it because it is so valuable. Every student, professor or researcher doing any sort of research that uses statistics. Absolutely critical to understanding and interpreting modern statistics. I was able to read through this book and understand what Cohen was talking about after an undergraduate statistics course. Really simple to understand and really able to see the implications of the effect size. Also, you realize that the p-value is a really meaningless score! Best of luck to all!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2014I did find more straight forward means of calculating effect size and sample size at a free stats web site. So, purchase of this text was a bit of a waste.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2011Supposedly this is THE book to read on power analysis. The book touches on power calculations very quickly and then provides the relevant statistics in a large set of tables; you could probably just borrow it from the library when needed rather than pay to have it, but a good reference text nonetheless.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2017Must have book.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 1999Cohen does a masterful job of taking the guesswork out of statistical power estimation. This text provides procedural guidelines for determining power for many designs, and can be quite helpful in determining proper sample sizes. Not for the casual reader, but a necessary addition to any serious researchers statistical library.

Consultant data miningReviewed in France on February 20, 20144.0 out of 5 stars Impec!
