I have a lot of Stax, Motown, Chess, etc., individual artist records and also compilations. You might ask well why have duplicates? I LOVE THE SONGS! I love the individuals artist records when i want to hear just one person but these compilations i love the best because you get to hear so many good songs per cd. I like buying different compilations of the same company (like Stax, Motown, Chess, etc.) because i like the different grouping and honestly never (so far) tire of the songs. All the said, its still about price so as long as the price is reasonable...so is purchasing another one.....for me anyway. Here's to GREAT LISTENING!!! :)

The affordable Stax box set

Because I couldn't afford the 1959-1968 Complete Stax-Volt box set, I got this instead. Practically all the songs I care about are here. The only obvious omission is "Hip Hug Her" by Booker T. & the M.G's. But since that's on the Atlantic Rhythm & Blues box set which I also own, I didn't mind that too much. Disc one has the songs you hear on oldies stations. The lesser known but still essential tracks covering the Atlantic era (Kinda Blue) and the post-Atlantic era (Finger Snapping Good) are on discs two and three with the volume titles inspired by the Stax label designs of those two eras. Disc four features tracks recorded live. As exciting as the songs are as recorded in the converted movie theater on McLemore Avenue, they were even more exciting when performed on stage.

Other reviews here cover the missing songs. As a less knowledgeable still huge fan recently moved to Memphis this collection has all the songs and a very nice 64 page booklet w/photos. Contains a lot of information on Stax history & legend, enough to keep me happy.
There are other cheaper sets out there now, specifically a 2 disc set for $16 that is also remastered from Stax released in 2007 (Concord Music bought Fantasy Records which included the Stax catalog in 2006).
Sound on this set is great. I am glad I bought this 98 song collection, I understand no compilation is ever complete, I'm sure if I had bought a smaller collection I would still be shopping to find the missing tracks. Nice packaging, black velveteen box w/magnetic flap.

I had come across some of the earlier Stax material via Atlantic R&B record set years ago,including the unbelievable "These Arms of Mine" by Otis R.I was inspired by a recent excellent 2 hour TV doco.about Stax to chase up this 98 track collection.Certainly some of the tracks have not stood up well over years but, along with the expected quality tracks from Otis R. and Sam and Dave, I did find several gems I would not have known b4, especially a Mel and Tim track and Albert King`s rendition of a great Etta James song.I also bought the DVD of the Stax Live show in Norway 1967, which was strongly covered in the TV Doco. and is an excellent companion to this CD set.
