Spoiler: one other thing parents should be cautioned on, mostly if reading to younger children, two characters die in the book. There deaths are glossed over and the dead characters seem to be out of sight out of mind but that in itself is a bit disturbing.
Overall I would recommend this book only to kids old enough to get past all the confusion and only to people that don't mind the girls are better than boys undertones. The book, once you get past the confusion at the beginning, keeps your interest and lessons on survival are taught. However, stupidity is shown in more than one instance, the worst of which is when the kids catch a bird after going five days with almost no food. No one will kill it, not even the teacher, so one of the kids let's the bird go. For anyone reading to younger kids or that doesn't want their kids encouraged to think that boys aren't as competent as girls should not read this book.
