With the help of useful diagrams and illustrations, the book describes preventative care starting in early childhood, adolescence, and then works through every decade starting at 20-29, until the final "65 or older." Each screening is written about in detail, and tells you what to expect, from the symptoms of the ailment, to the screening options with their advantages and disadvantages (colon screening for instance has 3 options to choose from and discuss with your doctor), to the actual screening procedures, the possible results, and potential cures.
As a "65 or older" person that is getting ready for her first physical exam, mammogram, and whatever else the doctor feels necessary in decades, "Stay Healthy at Every Age" has been a wonderful preparation. I know what to expect, what questions to ask, and what options to choose. Dr. Shantanu Nundy has provided a great service by writing this detailed and useful book.
Part 1 is very brief and explains the idea behind the book (preventive care) and the rationale behind the recommendations (USPSTF). It's only for Americans as other countries have different health care and issues. Part 2 has checklists for the different ages. The bulk of the book is Part 3 with chapters that pertain to the checklists. So, if you're in the age group of 40-49 you'll want to start with chapter 4 on blood pressure screening, which includes explanations about what it is, how it's diagnosed, and treatments. It explains the medical language that your doctor might use to help you communicate more effectively. It's very easy to follow and each age range has additional checklists based on the different risk factors (male or female, family history, weight, smoking, drinking, sex with multiple or same-sex partners, etc.) and chapters to explain what you need to know. It's the kind of book you could take with you to the doctor to help ensure you understand your health care better.
I found it an easy to use book, but few of the risk factors applied to me and I was able to go through the applicable chapters in an evening. Still it was useful and got me thinking more about my health. I especially appreciate the chapter on cholesterol screening as it helps to understand a little better those blood tests the doctor ordered.
It introduces you to the differences between treating illness and preventing those you may be at risk for. It requires a shift in thinking and I loved this simple explanation the author gives us. "Shift our thinking from symptoms to risk factors, from diagnosis to screening, from treatment to prevention, and from doctor's responsibility to shared responsibility."
The book has a checklist for all ages of the tests and conversations you need to talk with your doctor about. I was delighted that I am already doing all the correct things for my age. I have a doctor who thinks this way and keeps me current, very grateful.
The book explains all the tests in detail so you can make informed choices with your doctor. Don't put off getting a checkup because you are afraid of the results. Go in with knowledge and understanding.
I highly recommend this to everyone 18 and older. It is a must have reference guide written so anyone can understand it. Also Dr Nundy doesn't include anything that had not been medically proven to be effective over many trials and time. No fads or quick fix tricks. Good sound medical knowledge.
The biggest drawbacks are the omissions. There's nothing about screening for skin cancer, lung cancer, prostrate cancer, or any other cancers other than breast and colon, Alzheimers, heart disease other than cholesterol, hearing or vision loss, mental health other than depression, etc. There is a very, very brief overview of heart disease and cancer, but it's not very helpful and doesn't indicate that testing and screening are available for heart diseases or cancers beyond what are covered in the book.
Don't buy this book if you're looking to change your life. It won't really teach you how to stay healthy, and it's far from comprehensive. For the topics it does cover, it is an excellent companion to review before and after a visit with the doctor. But I wouldn't rely on it as a sole source of information to know what to expect during an exam or what testing and screening are appropriate.
