Editorial Reviews

Review

"A romance of rare quality. It takes you to the heart of passion, through various trials of a real life relationship, and into the power of sincere love. And it's hilariously funny!"
A.K. Frailey, author, The Deliverance Trilogy

"... a beautiful Christian love story that will put a song in your heart. It will make you hungry for Rebecca's bakery but also hungry for true love that can best be understood in light of John Paul II's Theology of the Body."
Theresa Linden, author The Liberty Trilogy

"... a poignant and believable love story about two young adults from very different backgrounds. The characters are richly depicted and memorable, including the secondary characters. The story is sprinkled with humor and contains the perfect balance of reality and sweetness and her writing entertains while radiating substance and depth. Stay With Me is a journey of discovery, forgiveness, and redemption--a beautiful journey of two hearts that long to beat as one."
Therese Heckenkamp, award-winning author, Frozen Footprints

"A tale packed with desire and determination, pain and longing, healing and hope, not to mention peopled with flesh-andblood characters who sweep the reader away into a world we all know with struggles so much like our own, Stay With Me delivers the very best of the inspirational romance genre. Highly recommended!"
Erin McCole Cupp, author, Don't You Forget About Me

Shopping for yogurt can change your life, especially when it brings together two strikingly attractive twenty-somethings. Chris immediately responds to Rebecca, setting up a first date. Could this be the result of the alignment of the stars, an inborn response to hormones and pheromones, or God’s using biology to call two people to the vocation of marriage?

Confident and heroically virtuous about ninety percent of the time, Chris asks Rebecca to trust him. Rebecca, a prime candidate for the Extreme Makeover TV show, believes in Chris and grows emotionally, despite her major hang-ups. Their casual meeting leads to love, as in: love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Unfortunately, Rebecca cannot love or forgive herself. How can she believe Chris’ “I love you?” Does she suspect deceit, seeing herself as unlovable?

Magnificently appealing, but blemished humans, Chris and Rebecca come alive with all their emotions as they ride the rocky road of romance. Their “Joyride” winds through some of Pennsylvania’s most scenic vistas and historical sites with the musical accompaniment of Dave Matthews Band, or something that sounds just like it.

Astfalk’s supporting characters include Abby, the public breast-feeding sister of Rebecca. Snarky Abby has all the best lines in “Stay with Me,” revealing the most intimate “female” secrets: the things girls never discuss in front of their boyfriends, never, never, ever! An equal opportunity dealer in irritation, she finds ways to embarrass Chris. Abby has something to offend everybody. To her credit, she can wax philosophical and offer comfort. While Rebecca cowers under the influence of their puritanical father, Abby flaunts her independence, perking up every scene in which she appears.

I was thrilled to be asked to read an advance copy of Stay With Me written by a former coworker, Carolyn Astfalk. Her debut novel is a love story but, more than that, it's a life story. The characters are genuinely likable especially Rebecca's sister Abby. Chris and Rebecca's story is a great mix of the turmoil of relationships. Happiness, sadness, fear, and longing all swirl around in each of us and as we meet new people we need to work through all our emotions to be able to stay with them in a relationship. This book was a great read and the story moves along at a good pace so you really won't want to put it down because you don't want to miss a thing! Now, that I'm finished the book, I miss Chris and Rebecca. They are one of those literary couples who stay with you. I would love for the author to make this book the first in a multi-book series because I want to meet these characters again! Maybe Abby's story next? Stay tuned because whatever Carolyn Astfalk writes, you are going to want to read it!

I loved the characters in this book. Well most of them. I didn't care for her overbearing abusive father who never changed even at the end of the book. The author did a good job of making the reader despise him.

I loved Rebecca and Chris. They were from completely different religious backgrounds but fell in love anyway. Both were devoted Christians but Rebecca has some baggage due to her abusive father. Chris is a new Christian who loves the Lord and wants his family to know the love of Christ too but he doesn't push. Even though Chris and Rebecca love the Lord they are not immune to sin but they are repentent. I loved Father John. He was so wise and gave Chris godly advice.

I enjoyed this book even though I am a Christian Protestant and Chris is a Christian Catholic and would desire for his wife to share the same faith.

One thing that bothered me in this book was Rebecca's sister, Abby. Abby had no filter on her mouth and some of the things that came out of her mouth was just not appropriate. Not swear words or anything but just inappropriate comments. Another thing that may possibly bother some people is the use of alcohol.

I was privileged to receive an advance copy of Stay With Me. This book is an outstanding example of the exemplary fiction being written by contemporary Catholic authors who are willing to take on the pressing social and moral issues of our time and doing so constructively and interestingly, with realistic and quick paced story lines.

You will have no problem recognizing yourself, family and friends through the voices of Chris, Rebecca and her sister, Abby. Their powerful personalities will jump off the pages of this book.

This is an exceptionally well written and realistic novel. I found it difficult to put it down. In fact, I read it in two days – choosing not to do other things on my agenda. I do not regret doing so.

This novel addresses practical issues in the lives of all unmarried couples who struggle with the Catholic Church’s teachings on chastity and premarital sex, give no consideration to them, reject them outright, or mistakenly believe it is impossible to live out those truths.

Carolyn Astfalk does this seamlessly, realistically and compellingly. You will be surprised. You will be moved. You will be pleased you took the time to read Stay With Me. And, I have no doubt, you will be recommending it to everyone you know..
