Praise for Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered:
#1 New York Times Bestseller
#1 USA Today Bestseller
#1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller
"Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark share practical wisdom in “Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered,” which is a No. 1 debut on our advice, how-to and miscellaneous best-seller list."―The New York Times
"Hardstark and Kilgariff’s podcast takes on crime, death and other gory subjects, all filtered through the pair’s subversive wit as they riff on life’s craziness, often sharing details from their own mental health and substance abuse struggles. This openness translates onto the page. A kind of life guide...the book is just as funny as the podcast but often goes deeper into painful subjects." ―Los Angeles Times
“All the best advice your mother never told you.” ―Jenny Lawson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Furiously Happy
“Kilgariff and Hardstark bring a much needed dimension to our current, true crime fever dream―an empathetic, slangy dose of acidic humor, weary compassion, and nervous hope. Their podcast is a joy to listen to and this book captures its energy and hilarity perfectly.” ―Patton Oswalt, New York Times bestselling author of Silver Screen Fiend
“In addition to being laugh-out-loud funny, smart, and incisive, Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered is so interesting and insightful that it made me a) want to be best friends with the authors and b) for real ask them to take me on as a therapy patient. This book is hilarious, honest, insightful, and clever as hell. Do yourself a fun favor by buying it and consuming it. You’ll emerge at the final word as a new-and-improved badass version of your former self.” ―Megan Mullally, New York Times bestselling co-author of The Greatest Love Story Ever Told
“It’s like an afternoon coffee date with your best friend that spills late into the night―where you share your darkest secrets and hardest-earned advice, and then emerge back into the world fully recharged. And ready to destroy toxic masculinity. Karen and Georgia are the voice of a movement―badass and vulnerable as hell―and this is their manifesto.” ―Stephanie Perkins, New York Times bestselling author of There's Someone Inside Your House
Praise for My Favorite Murder:
“Wildly popular…. In many ways, the subversive charm of [My Favorite Murder] is today’s answer to riot grrrl, the D.I.Y. feminist punk movement of the 1990s.” ―The New York Times
“[My Favorite Murder] empowers listeners by offering practical advice for survival and self-care and by using comedy to deflate the scariness of these topics.” ―TheAtlantic.com
“Morbid [and] mirthful.” ―Entertainment Weekly

Weirdly, I recently read another self-help book by a pair of podcasters, which was called HOW TO BE FINE. I did not like HOW TO BE FINE and after reading this book, I think I know why. HOW is like this Pinterest-perfect version of being flawed, carefully curated and, you know, aspirational-- but in a really conspicuous way that also makes you feel simultaneously attacked and annoyed. This book is like seeing the posts of one of your oversharing friends on Instagram, where they're as open about their struggles as they are their triumphs. Parts of it are aspirational but they also keep it real and when they give you advice, it feels like they're on the level, if you know what I mean.
I ended up really liking this book. Some people gave it negative reviews because it goes to some dark places but I think the authors talked about trauma and recovery in a really healthy way and gave good advice too. I loved the memoir portions, which alternated between devastating and hilarious (and weirdly, that worked-- maybe because of the gallows humor required to be entertaining in a true crime podcast), and thought their lives were fascinating. I loved hearing about their families. I thought the things they said about feminism and social awareness were totally on point. This was purely an impulse buy for me and I went into it highly skeptical but honestly, it is THE self-help book I would recommend to anyone seeking solace that comes couched in the jaded skepticism of the Gen X mentality.
So, basically, I'm considering myself an honorary Murderino.
3.5 to 4 out of 5 stars
Moments and lessons only mentioned on the podcast get deeper dives here - and what really comes through truly is their willingness to be totally open to teach nieces, young women, and even our younger selves about how to navigate this world. Vulnerability gets a lot of mentions and the book speaks to the power of opening yourself up for witness. The community these two women have cultivated is a testament to how important therapy, vulnerability, and being kind to yourself really is. This book is an extension of the podcast bookends, the intro and outro, and I believe many fans (and non-fans) will recognize feelings and thoughts and experiences they share with the authors.
I found myself laughing and then tearing up on the same page often (gotta love a footnote joke). Even though the relationship between these two and the reader is one way you do feel like you're reading the stories of a friend, and their sorrows are yours and their triumphs are as well. The connection they share with each other as well is apparent and powerful. I'm so thankful for Halloween parties.
On a personal note reading everything these two women have been talking about on the podcast for years gathered all in one place is truly inspirational. I'm particularly grateful for Karen speaking about how her therapist asked her to examine her 'inner circle', your 'clutch-five', your close friends. I feel grateful to have my own clutch-five but it reminded me that I needed to put more energy into those relationships and not to take them for granted, or let them be stagnant. I reached out to all of them and it felt really nice to reconnect and just say "You're important to me and I love you".
People unfamiliar with the podcast or these women will probably enjoy the book (if you like feminism and swearing especially) but a lot of the jokes, the titles, and just the general essence will probably fly over their heads. But at its core that's not who the book is for. The book is for the Murderinos who found a connection with these women and with each other not just based on their fascination with true crime but also their willingness to not be perfect, to grow and learn, and their vulnerability and strength in the face of a scary, rough and cynical world.
SSDGM indeed.
It also delves a lot into personal backstories of the authors and why they made the podcast and their persona connection to it. Having not listened to the podcast I don't know these women and their backstories don't mean much to me. The person who I gave the book to listens to the podcast regularly and as such was very interested in the authors' backgrounds.
So ultimately it's apparently a great book and very interesting 'must read' if you're into the podcast. It's not exactly a page turner if you're not into the podcast. So if you like the podcast, get it, red it, love it. You are their target audience. If you haven't listened to the podcast, this is probably not for you.
5 stars because the person I gave it to loved it and she is the authors' target audience.

They promised a look into their lives that the podcast couldn't offer and yet everything in the book was a story or lesson they'd already discussed either once or multiple times.
I felt disappointed, like I'd been lied to for cheap marketing tactics and that upset me because Georgia and Karen are so authentic about everything else.
If you're looking for a little more detail into the same stories you've already heard several times before then this is the book for you. If it's new information or stories then you should probably go buy another book.
