Just alright- nothing fancy
on December 31, 2011
I got this book on my kindle based on recommendations and reviews from other readers. At times, I really liked it, at other times, I just wanted to kick Melissa and her stupid husband. Melissa is a 39 year old who's juggling what all women juggle- work, marriage, home life, self esteem, etc. For the most part she does ok juggling all these aspects, but she is just so annoying in her constant put downs of herself and not giving herself credit or standing up for herself. Personally I just really hate characters like that- they don't stand up for themselves, let the husband take control and are so self deprecating. For example Melissa's co-ancher comes on to her and she agonizes over telling her husband for days. She's racked with guilt over this guy's come on in which nothing happened and was not instigated by her. I just get so irritated with main characters like that.
The writing is just ok, sometimes good, sometimes not. The author had me hooked in in the first chapter with her writing style. Then other times I found myself rolling my eyes- she completely glossed over some pretty key issues- her husband's parents writing him out of the will because he married her? Melissa literally said "oh" and then moved on. That's it- no further explanation really. The ending wrapped up a little too quickly and nicely...
The chapters are short and the book is a quick read. Overall it was an "eh" for me- not the worst book but nothing that I would probably recommend others to read. Some funny parts- her best friend Candace is great, but not enough to save this story for me. Traditional chick lit following a script. Feels like a book you've read before.
