I love Mercy's writing style. Her ability to perfectly catch a moment -- from playing on stage, to laying under the stars, to getting attacked by a rival band with firecrackers -- completely wrecks me. It's as if I'm sitting in the back of Steady Beth with Soft enjoying road life.
Full of character and characters this book is unbelievable. From Sonia and her battle to give Soft their big break to Joey pinning over the missed connection with Little Lauren Hutton and Cole enjoying his last hurrah in the band before he quits to join the family business...even if I had to Google "who is Lauren Hutton" this book is perfect.
Mercy doesn't miss a beat in capturing the 90s, the rural South, finding yourself and falling in love.
The connection between Sonia and Cole is so real. There's nothing about this book that seems trite or out of place.
As Sonia and Cole fight their internal battles and blaze a trail to happily ever after they're joined by Trap Emmy and Joey of course and the best set of minor characters I've ever read. Each interaction pushing the story the forward.
I'm so sad I can only read this book for the first time once. It's captivating and thrilling.
Now I'm going to sit here with my Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers and patiently wait for book 3 and the Beefcake that is Joey.
With the added element of a road trip, and all the hijinks that entails, STAY UNTIL WE BREAK is the perfect summer read.
I can't decide if it's because it takes me back to the time period that I was in high school and makes me nostalgic or if it's because the characters and their interactions feel so raw and real. (PS, I wrote this line before rereading my review for LIHILY and seeing that I used this exact wording then. It just means that MB is consistent in her writing of real s**t) Just like in the first book, there was something about the way the characters use the word f*** that really does it for me. Maybe it's because there is no pretense and that they call it like it is and it feels so real to me. I mean it's not like the word isn't used in other books, it's just that it feels less like a word to distinguish the act before love is involved and more like a way to describe the act and the emotions of it all bundled up together. Anyways...I digress.
I've been waiting for Cole and Sonia's book since I read the teaser in Loud is How I Love You. I can't seem to get enough of SOFT and their chemistry as a band and as friends. The partying, the pranks, the music and the sex...oh man, the sex, it all comes together to give you a perfect glimpse into the whole musician lifestyle and wish that you were a part of it.
Cole is sexy and smart and everything I wanted in a boyfriend during the early 90's. Sunny is sweet and strong and not afraid to try new things and to go after her dreams, despite making mistakes along the way. I loved Cole and Sunny together. The heat between them was explosive and I couldn't get enough! There was a slow but steady build-up to the romance between them and while you could predict what was ahead for their romance, their story never felt predictable. I felt like I was living in their story and that I was going through each and every emotion they were going through.
I enjoyed reading this story so much that I didn't want it to end but I'm giddy with anticipation for what comes next from Mercy Brown.
