Holistic Nurse Consultant
Book Review of “Staying Healthy with New Medicine” (2016) by Dr. Elson Haas
When the doors opened to China in the ‘70’s, the US and China formed a collaboration to share the best of Eastern and Western Medicine. The Barefoot Doctor’s Manual was a result of the shared wisdom designed to provide a deeper understanding of the essence and treatment of disease. An important bridge was built defining the beginnings of world medicine…and Elson Haas was on it!
Dr. Haas has been my hero in my 40 years of holistic nursing practice, pioneering the synthesis of global wisdom. His landmark book, “Staying Healthy with the Seasons” is the only book on my shelves which is totally worn out as I refer to the 5 Chinese seasons of the year and ways to keep in balance in each season. It has been a foundation for me in connecting with the natural rhythms of the earth, the seasons and myself.
In his fabulous new book, “Staying Healthy with the New Medicine” , Elson has again served as: a sage in reflecting important insights regarding the current state of a dysfunctional “disease care” model in our country; as an elder, naming the dynamics of what needs to be considered in creating a new approach to education, research, practice and presence; and as an evolved pioneer on the edge of the expanding universe of optimal health and wellbeing.
As a dedicated instrument of healing, Elson covers the many dimensions of wellbeing with grounded recommendations for each area of our lives. Highlighting the need for personal responsibility and widespread education, he shares valuable guidelines regarding healthy living.
This book is a timely guide to imminent issues in our country in treating the cause rather than the symptoms of disease. “The New Medicine” needs to be a part of White House reading to inform policies, protocols, practices in helping others. In addition, healthcare practitioners who are creating new pathways for care need to use this as a reference in designing strategies for self care and presence to others. The people of the country will find this book refreshing and essential in helping them to higher levels of health and healing in every area of their lives.
Thank you. Elson, for your dedication and service to the greater good!

In this latest book, Dr. Haas not only goes into great detail about the various holistic modalities that contribute to the NEW Medicine approach but also shares his valuable insights about the pro’s and con’s of traditional Western Medicine and about the current health care system. While Dr. Haas is quick to point out the many positive aspects of traditional medicine, in regard to preventive health care, he advocates: lifestyle first, natural therapies second, and drugs or Western medical intervention last.
One of the strong points of this book is that in addition to a great deal of conceptual information, a wealth of real-life practical advice is given. In a chapter called “NEW Medicine in Practice: The Five Keys to Staying Healthy,” much wisdom about nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, and healthy attitudes is provided, which constitutes a virtual “how-to” guide for moving to increasingly higher levels of the health continuum. Another important element of the NEW Medicine is the doctor-patient relationship, which Dr. Haas calls a “cornerstone of true healing.”
Having been aware of Dr. Haas’ earliest books since the 1990’s, its been interesting to watch the medical profession and general population starting to catch up to many of his innovative concepts and practices that seemed so revolutionary at the time. Although there is obviously still a long way to go, there has truly been a renaissance in awareness about integrative medicine and preventive health care. Pioneers like Dr. Elson Haas have been at the forefront of empowering people to take a more active role in their own wellness, in addition to providing valuable information to doctors and health care providers as well. Staying Healthy with NEW Medicine is a valuable resource and veritable treasure trove of information and practical advice for anyone wanting to improve their health. Highly recommended!
