Neil said it best - "I don't get it, Zoey. I really don't. You have this guy who would do anything for you, who loves you to the bottom of his soul, and you go sleep with Dev." Yeah. What Neil said. So Zoey goes into the whole "it's not love, it's addiction" thing, to which Neil replies - "When I saw you for the first time, I felt my heart open up in a way it never had before...It was Daniel. I felt an echo of what he feels when he looks at you. God, Zoey, you are the sun in his sky..." Again, what Neil said.
What didn't work for me - Zoey can't get past the addiction thing, nor can she move past the fact that Daniel left her when he was first turned. We get some insight into that in Steal the Day. So Dev is the good time guy in her attempt to...what? Hurt Daniel? Because that is what she is doing. So when her feelings move from lust into true caring, Daniel is hurt all the more. Zoey and Daniel are kind of stuck. They love each other, they are frickin' married, yet Dev is the one in her bed. I didn't like it. At all.Read more ›
Given the delicate politics surrounding Daniel's mission, it was disappointing to see her behave like a wannabe gangsta. The whole "it's cute how unpredictable she is" grew old quickly. Ironically, both Dev and Daniel became more complex and interesting in Book 2.
Ms. Blake is a good writer despite my frustration with the heroine.
"Those shoes were exciting and sexy, and just the slightest bit uncomfortable. They were a little like my relationship with Dev."
"I promise I won’t let anything nasty happen to you. Well, not anything I am not directly involved in." Ha!
“I love you, Zoey. I’ve never said those words before this moment. I love you, and if you leave me for that blood sucker, I’ll lose the best part of me."
3.5 stars not rounded to 4 due to cliffhanger. If you are not a fan of love triangles, then you might want to give this a miss. I'm hoping for a more interesting version of Zoey in Book 3.
This book took quite an interesting turn!
But first, the general stuff---action, heists, the supernatural, humor, vampires, biting, sex, and lots of it! But it wasn't just about sex. I liked getting to know the characters more, learning more about their pasts, and delving deeper into their emotions. Much like the first book, even though it was a fun read, it did have depth and emotion--like the bada**, killing machine, assassin, vampire king weeping on the floor in the middle of a room full of people, or Daniel and Dev angry enough at each other to literally try and rip each other apart or bury each other in the ground in an all out magical brawl.
And then there were the interesting twists. They may not have been entirely realistic, and I definitely didn't expect them, but it's fiction, and it's fantasy. If you're willing to go with the flow and trust the story, you'll probably end up loving it. If you liked the characters, the intensity behind the characters' emotions, the writing style, the sexiness, the humor, the world, and the story in general in the first book, I recommend continuing the series because all those things are still there, and the rest will grow on you.
