Will and Angelica have a history that is muddled, dirty, and heartbreaking. Their past included that once in a lifetime love that was torn apart by drug abuse. They both walked away with shattered souls. They both walked away broken. How they moved forward in life was vastly different from the world in which they loved. It is going to take a miracle, the willingness to forgive, a little push from their friends, and a very persuasive meddling director to make these two realize they were meant for one another. Love always prevails at Seaside.
Once again Rachel Van Dyken proved that true love always comes out on top and that friendships are valuable. If you are looking for a fun and angsty romance that is loaded with emotional angst and laugh out loud humor, Steal is the book to read.
Entitled, self-serving, manipulative, egotistical. She's the Hollywood diva that sets the standard for how obnoxious others might aspire to be. Only now, with much deserved bad press, failed movies, and a long running battle with addiction, she's one movie role away from B grade obscurity.
That's where Will Sutherland comes in. Once the lead singer of teen boy band sensation Adrenaline, these days, having left all of that way behind, he's an agent. Angelica's new agent who's managed to get her a part working with a crew, almost all of whom she's burned some time in the past. Long after she burned Will himself. Her ex-boyfriend.
I love redemption stories, yet I often struggle to see the protagonist with a sympathetic eye. Knowing the kind of acts they've performed in the past, the things they've said, seeing them as anything other than a villan is hard.
That's one of the reasons I loved Steal so much. With just a few short sentences, in the first few chapters, Rachel Van Dyken had me reevaluating everything I'd ever known about Angelica. Every action, every word reexamined under the new light shone on her past.
From this new vantage I was almost tempted to see Will, ostensibly doing her a favor as the bad guy. The one who failed to see what the reader had suddenly become privy to. The one who, from this new perspective was behaving like an insensitive jerk even as he risked his own reputation and career betting on someone who'd only ever let him down.
Of course, being Seaside, included among the cast of characters are many favorites for fans of previous books, and that couldn't happen without accompanying shenanigans, not the least of which push Will and Angelica together, time after time, in what at least initially is the most uncomfortable of pairings.
I laughed, I smiled, I giggled like a little girl. My heart clenched, my throat constricted, my eyes leaked (like a little man). I found myself wavering between Will and Angelica. Sympathizing with each, wanting each to find closure for the pains each has kept close for far too long, wanting each to extract satisfaction from the other regardless of the cost or the fallout.
And I was reminded once again why I love Rachel's writing so very very much.
I have been and always will be a fan of second chance romance. I love the thrill, the drama and the challenges in winning a love lost back, or finding your way back into each others arms. It always makes me want to hang on to the book longer than my eyes could take and just get to the part where they kiss and make up. This is exactly what happened to me when I read Steal. A beautiful second chance romance that pulled me in the moment I started reading.
This was an emotional read for me. The path that Will and Angelica took to be together once again was rough. The bitterness in Will's heart towards Angelica was strong that it broke my heart whenever he didn't treat her well. I felt Angelica's pain and it crushed my heart to see her suffering. But, simultaneously, felt Will's pain too. He truly loved Angelica and was so devastated when he lost her to drugs and to his best friend. I just couldn't take sides because I understood how both of them felt. When they finally got back together, I was so overjoyed. The love that once was lost came back naturally as they still love each other so much.
It's due to books like these that makes me want to forget my worries, drop whatever I'm doing and just curl up in bed and never leave until I'm done. YES that's always been the magnetic effect of Rachel's books to me. STEAL was no exception. Who wouldn't be when I had Will and the whole Seaside gang to swoon till the end. For me, only Rachel can come up with a story that will make you fall in love all over again with characters you've met in her previous books. I had an amazing time reminiscing the moment I met and fell in love with each of the Seaside gang. Everybody was just so much a part of the story as Will and Angelica, and that's what I love mostly in this book.
I was counting the pages as I got near towards the end. So happy that Will and Angelica were finally a couple once again. There was reconciliation and reunion of friends who once were torn and broken up. I knew the ending would be perfect. Amazingly for Rachel, she just had to leave one more blast towards the finale. You have got to read Steal to find out what I meant and experience it yourself. The excitement never ends, kept me on the edge of my seat and grinning with joy the whole time. BEST ENDING EVER!!! Now I'm off to counting the days (again) till the next book comes out.
