Review
"Stealing Propeller Hats from the Dead is a work that finds success on multiple levels. A great set of entertaining genre stories that any zombie fan can dive into and enjoy one bite at a time, but also a deep, well-thought-out commentary on the history of the subgenre... a few of the finest zombie tales of recent years. The collection ends with the rules to a zombie movie drinking game that you must absolutely never, ever consider playing." -Hellnotes
"It is impossible to have more fun reading than this. Z-fic that is steeped in the gonzo tradition on pages that flap when you turn em. I dig it." -Tony Burgess, author of Pontypool Changes Everything and People Live Still in Cashtown Corners

About the author

David James Keaton's work has appeared in over 100 publications. His contribution to Plots With Guns #10 was named a Notable Story of 2010 by storySouth's Million Writers Award, and his (totally foolproof) casino scam in Crime Factory #8 won the 2012 Spinetingler Award for the Best Short Story on the Web. His first collection, FISH BITES COP! Stories to Bash Authorities (Comet Press), was named the 2013 Short Story Collection of the Year by This Is Horror and was a finalist for the Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award. His second collection of short fiction, STEALING PROPELLER HATS FROM THE DEAD (Perpetual Motion Machine), received a Starred Review from Publishers Weekly, who said, "Decay, both existential and physical, has never looked so good." His first novel, THE LAST PROJECTOR (Broken River), was called "A loopy, appealing mix of popular culture and thoroughly crazy people" by Kirkus Reviews, and his second novel, the western PIG IRON (Burnt Bridge/Blastgun), was optioned for film. He has also been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, was the Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of Flywheel Magazine, and the co-editor of HARD SENTENCES: Crime Fiction Inspired by Alcatraz and TALES FROM THE CRUST: An Anthology of Pizza Horror. His latest novel, HEAD CLEANER (Polis), was called "a nonstop thrill ride blending science fiction, horror, and a lot of humor, for readers who enjoy Chuck Palahniuk and Lauren Beukes" by Library Journal. He's also tinkering with several screenplays, including a prison movie, a thriller, and a western, and will probably adapt them into novels. He realizes this method is probably backwards. He can be contacted at davidjameskeaton[at]gmail[dot]com.

Equal parts humor and horror, you can't really go wrong with anything printed in this book. And Keaton knows his zombies. There is an encyclopedic knowledge of zombie films, and horror films in general on display in this thing. Just check out "Zee Bee & Bee" and you'll know precisely what I'm talking about.
A few other favorites are "...And I'll Scratch Yours (or the One Who Had None)" and "Greenhorns." Both of these stories reminded me of something that could easily translate to film in a "Tales from the Crypt" kind of anthology. Imagine if we still had a show like that with episodes written by the likes of David James Keaton, and Adam Cesare. Jeez. The possibilities! Oh well, maybe one day. In the meantime, you should check this sucker out. I think you'll like it.
Ready to smash some well worn tropes? Ready to give the genre a bizarre overhaul? Of course you are. DJK never fails to amaze and horrify! He has a particularly odd take on stories that you can't possibly predict. Whatever he is drinking? STAY AWAY FROM THAT WELL WATER!!
In STEALING PROPELLER HATS FROM THE DEAD Keaton is shambling to a whole different tune than all other authors of zombie fiction. In the foreword to the book, David Tallerman says, "Surely it can only be a matter of time before the right editor gets fried with a thousand volts of Keatonesque pulp-literary goodness." Those last four words pretty much sum up the work of David James Keaton. Keaton has an organic, conversational style that grabs you from the first word of the introduction and doesn't let go until the last word of the last story. And the introduction is definitely one you should read. I don't usually read an entire introduction to any book, but I'm really glad I stuck with this one. Not since the early days of Stephen King have I read an introduction so entertaining as to keep me reading to its finish. But this one did. It yanked me in and jettisoned me out the other end with a momentum that didn't let up until the end of the book. And, as an added bonus, at the end of the book Keaton has included a drinking game that you should never, ever, EVER play.
With surgically deft strokes Keaton cuts to the raw beating heart of humanity in this collection in which one man learns what it means to fish or cut bait, a young woman receives the gift of her dreams, and the hilarious plight of toothless zombies somehow manages to break your heart. STEALING PROPELLER HATS FROM THE DEAD--the title inspiring novella "Zee Bee & Bee" in particular--reads like a b-movie cult classic as imagined by David Lynch and penned by Hemingway.
This is the first book I've read by Keaton but it definitely won't be the last. He's a precise and thoughtful wordsmith with a flare for the absurd and an eye for vivid imagery that sticks in the mind long after the last words echo into silence. If you only read one book of zombie fiction this year, make it this one and make it soon. Keaton's book is one of the literary highlights of the year so far.
