Regarding others complaints that it squirms up around their face, the issue is due to the fact that smaller children have short torsos and so when you have them sitting on your lap the vest comes up around their neck. Last summer when my kid was 6 months old, she didn't particularly enjoy putting this on initially but once the boat started going, she was fine. This year she she is taller and doesn't care, and one day when we had it lying around day after a trip, she even tried to put it on even though we were at home. As an aside, the other day we were out on a boat with another family with a child the same age as my daughter and they had a ski vest style vest on, and the kid was screaming bloody murder while my daughter was just chilling out. Bottom line is that kids are not likely to initially like wearing a life jacket, and so focus on what is safest for them.
A final advantage of this vest is the the handle on the neck part of the vest. You can easily hold onto a child in situations where you might be a little concerned without them really knowing you have a grip on them (try doing that in a ski life vest; you can't do it discreetly). We took our kid to the beach and let them walk in the surf edge because we could hold on to her, without her noticing that we actually had a grip on her.
Bad: its very thick, stiff and cumbersome, we put it on our 5mo baby girl and zipped it up and it looked like she was getting choked, our little girl is pretty slender and in the 80th percentile for height, yet her neck seemed to be getting strangled by the jacket, obviously she started to freak out when i put it on her because it was to tight.
It states infants up to 30lbs, ummm NO WAY, my other son who is 2 1/2 is 30lbs and there is no way this would come close to zipping up on him.
So in short, this is to cumbersome and not soft enough for a small baby, maybe a 8mo?
I'll be returning it and using the one I bought for my boy when he was 7mo its cover is a nice soft neoprene material and the neck has more of a v-shap to it I would recommend it WAY over this, its called HO Infant Neo Vest [...] (the only reason i ordered a new one is because our old one is yellow with a panda on it... not really girly, oh well she won't know the diff, only my wife)
so 1 star because im sure it works and 2 because my wife said it was cute.
