The dial slides extremely easily and there is not much room at all between the headset and the dial. If you stand up or turn around, the dial will be pulled off of your desk and fall off. You will feel a heavy tug even. The dial slides between "Chat" and "Game". If you always want max volume at both, you will pretty much have to tie down the dial with a zip-tie. Otherwise you will constantly have volume problems.
Because of this giant dial, my ports are already getting ruined. I can only hear out of the right side of my headset unless I wiggle the port each time. The dial is so bulky that every time it is tugged, it ruins the ports just a little bit.
It really sucks to have spent so much on some really nice sounding headphones that are comfy, only to have them break because of poor design.
I'm out of my return period too. I wish the product reviews talked about this awful dial or the description had any warnings. I read through numerous threads of other customers (outside of Amazon) talking about how horrible this dial is.
I expect these will be entirely non-functional in less than 1 year.
The good: The main reason why you should get these is the design and comfort. In the past I primarily used earbuds for gaming because my head is prone to getting sweaty when using headsets. Amazingly, with these I do not have that problem. They are able to create a seal and yet also remain incredibly breathable. This coupled with how soft the ear cups are makes them very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I fell asleep with these on the other day and couldn't feel them at all. The other thing about these that I LOVE is the design. Oh man they look so good for gaming headsets. I like that you could use these on the street without someone immediately noticing that it is a gaming headset. The obnoxious reds, or blues, or green of many headsets is really unnecessary. However, if you did want these to have a bit more gamer DNA, you can always use the RGB lighting to spice it up.
The sound quality: This is a bit of a mixed bag because of the package they sell with the arctis 5. Let me explain. The headphones and the drivers themselves are very good for this price point. If this was not a gaming headset, rest assured that the price is fair for these drivers. They are not the best but they are very good in this price tier. Driving them with an audioquest dragonfly red or other dacs with stronger amplifiers, I was able to get stellar sound out of them with very minimal distortion even at high volume levels. The highs were controlled but textured and the bass+midrange are both great. You're not going to get knocked out of your seat by the bass, but it is very balanced. Whoever the sound engineers are at steelseries deserve a raise for producing this. However, the sound card they give you in the box does not have the quality level to really do these drivers justice. It is by no means bad, but it is not good enough for the headphone hardware they give you and it is the weakest link, which is a shame. Also a brief note, if you don't like the nuanced almost pseudo open back sound signature, you can get leather earcups from the steelseries website for superior bass. And it really does make a difference. Also, the software is good for tuning to your liking.
The bad: The DTS headphone X is just not good. I don't know what it is about virtual surround. I just really never like it. Also, as I said the sound card they give you isn't great. Moreover, the headphone cabling is done in a weird way. They give you 1.2 meters which then feeds into the sound card which then has a much longer cable attached to it. It is hard to explain, but basically the sound card is like a rock and it makes cable management a little weird because you don't quite get the freedom that a long cable should bring because of the sound card being in the middle like that. The headband doesn't go as small as it should so if you don't have the right sized head, the fit might not be great. When you mute the mic a red light pops up on it that is super obnoxious.
Bottom line: The headphones are really good. If you have a pre-existing audio set up, go with the arctis 3. If you don't have anything but a built in soundcard that isn't very good, go for the arctis 5. If you can, try it out first to see if the fit and sound signature are right for you. But this is worth your money.
- These are very comfortable, I normal game Friday and Saturday nights for about 5-7 hours. I can't even tell these are on, the ear piece is soft and fits me perfectly.
- I've seen a few reviews that people say they have no bass. I guess they didn't set theirs up right, the bass is great.
- The 7.1 surround sound is awesome, I love it! With my cheap headset I couldn't tell exactly what direction the sound was coming from......now I can.
- I like the volume control on the left ear piece. Also the game/voice adapter on the cord is perfect for when you want to hear more of the game vs the people you are talking to.
The game/voice adapter, I wish they would have made it a little harder to adjust it. If you bump it, it moves too easy for me. There have been one time I bumped it in game and was wondering why I couldn't hear, but that lasted about 2 seconds.
Overall these are excellent gaming headsets, I would recommend them to anyone. I was going to buy the Artics 3, but decided to spend the extra $20 for the better surround sound and pretty lights on the ear pieces. I plan on watching some movies with them, so I'll be able to see how the 7.1 sounds on movies.
