"Overall though the Steelsound headphones do what they say they will do: provide an unrivalled experience in online shooters. My feeling is that if you want the ultimate setup for an online shooter you won't be able to get better than this (without spending ludicrous amounts of money)."

Like other reviewers, these failed on my after a few months with the right speaker cutting in and out. For the money you can get much better sound quality, I would not recommend these to anyone.

I was expecting more from this product after reading dozens of reviews on the quality you get in fps games.
I was sadly mistaken, this headset sounds awful.
VERY awful if you enjoy listening to music or pretty much anything other than games.

There is 0 bass whatsoever in this headset no matter how much you play with the drivers EQ it will not put out bass.
Sort of sounds like ipod earbuds but larger.

Their claims about positional sound with this headset all derive from the simple fact that high frequencies emit a clearer direction than lower frequencies. This modification can be done to any headset that gives you 10 band EQ adjustment. just up your treble and lower your bass and mids, now you've got better positional audio for gaming.
I hear the siberia v2 usb has decent bass, so I'd go for that set before purchasing the 5hv2 usb.

experience: 5 years playing cs 1.6 competitively and gone through around 30 headsets/sound cards in this time.

Let me start off by saying, for gaming i don't think there is a better headset out there. The virtual 7.1 works flawlessly and the mic on this thing is crystal clear. Its relatively comfortable, although I start to sweat around my ears around the 1 hour mark. Also if you are considered one with a small head, i might go try it on first. I have what you call a large head with some hair and i have this thing cranked all the way down. Works for me but not so sure about others.

Music - Very mediocre. i know it is optimized for GAMING but i still feel it fell short in this department. don't expect to be blown away or even satisfied if you want to listen to music a lot on headphones.

All in all its a solid headset, and is well worth the money if you are into gaming.

UPDATE:so it has been 4 days and the right side of the headphones has stopped working. i am very surprised/annoyed because i handled these things like a baby and still went out on me. i thought it was something funky with vista so i turned on the "flip sound" so the left side plays on the right and visa versa and no sound still. plugged it into a friends computer and same thing. not very happy that i spent $100 on these and they fail within such a short amount of time.

I've used SteelSeries along with many other brands of gaming headsets and this one is definitely up there. As many people have mentioned before this headset is great for video games, especially FPS, but is not amazing when it comes to movie watching or listening to music.

Understanding that the depth of bass that one would expect for movies or music is not there because it was purposely designed that way. The higher end of the spectrum in terms of sound is great and thus does not get washed out by unneeded bass. This is especially helpful when listening for footsteps or other fine details.

The mic is high-quality, though it also picks up fans in the background as well. Very comfortable, never pinches my ears and I can wear it pretty much all day. Very light and easy to disassemble. Overall, very pleased with them for what I use them for.

I thought I had already written a review of this headset, but when asked about them - realized I hadn't. Originally bought these in 2010. I have run through at least three $40-$50 gaming headsets, prior to purchasing the SteelSeries. Almost always, one side would die, always annoying. These were recommended by a friend and I have to say - after FOUR years, they still work perfectly. I game several times a week, so they get a lot of heavy use.

I would make one suggestion, when taking them off do not wind the cord around them too tightly (and minimize the walking away from computer while they are still on your head :-)

December 2015: Okay update, my headset has finally failed me. Although the speaker part continues to work, the ability to hear voices has failed (oddly enough can hear background sound/music). It's a short, but that's how things go. However, I would still recommend this particular headset, after all lasted 5 years!

Very conformable. Excellent buy. My only problem is the mic. Its good. but not great. It has to face my mouth and be pretty close to it to pick up sound. I have messed with things to try and improve this. but it seems that it is just how the mic is. Regardless it was a good buy.

My title says it all. I'm honestly kind of glad they broke, since now I can invest in a better quality headset. If you do decide to purchase these, understand they this headset has 0 bass; it's mainly for FPS games. For some odd reason, the "sound card" causes a high pitched ringing sound that others can hear on skype/vent/mumble/etc, but you won't be able to hear it. It's not very noticeable, but it's annoying since you're aware that it's happening and can't do anything to fix it. This is the case for my headset and my brothers pair. The ringing goes away if you don't use the sound card, but what's the point, you payed a decent amount of money to not use it? I was never able to get the driver to work offered on the steelseries website for this headset, as others had this same issue. I used the default windows USB PnP driver, which worked fine.

Hope this helps.

UPDATE: I had them replaced since mine was under warranty, and the right earphone in the new headset rattles. The ringing I mentioned previously was still there, even with a newly provided sound card. Customer service was good, but that's probably because they're familiar with having to replace their products.

Bye steelseries.
