I have been a Steely Dan fanatic for decades and have read everything that I can find. The previous "great book" on Steely Dan was written by Brian Sweet and has a ton of information in it. But this book has so much more information that it is astounding. It is extremely detailed and is a fun read. I have learned so many things that I never knew about this band from this book. It has reawakened my desire to do more extensive research on Steely Dan. I play keyboards for and lead a Los Angeles based Steely Dan tribute band called Pretzel Logic. This book has helped me to inform the band and our audiences so much more about Steely Dan. If you like Steely Dan at all, this is the book to read.

This is a real labor of love that Steely Dan diehards will enjoy, but it's not for casual fans. There are lots of great stories about Fagen and Becker's background, songs, tours, solo careers, studio sessions, etc., with plenty of "who played what part" and "what the song meant" revelations. The research and attention to detail by Robustelli are impressive, and his writing is strong. The occasional drawback is that the format of the book (chapters about session musicians and their backgrounds interspersed with the narrative of the Dan's history) makes it a tough slog at times, and a bit repetitive. The bios of session musicians are best skimmed or skipped, unless you want to read long lists of every performer they ever played with. It's probably unfair I'm docking it a star for being too thorough at the occasional expense of readability, but Steely Dan obsessives will love it.
