For younger viewers, it may be a bit of a mystery, something outside their range of experience. And why not? So much of the spirit that it embodies has vanished from American culture, a loss that's made our culture sadder & flatter, despite all of its shiny technological distractions. Yes, there really was a time when easygoing personal freedom seemed a possible option—a freedom based not on cutthroat competition & "winning" & material "success" but on simply being & finding yourself.
The cast is engaging & enjoyably good company for the viewer throughout the shambolic narrative, with Donald Sutherland & Peter Boyle standing out in particular. Jane Fonda has a smaller role, but she's clearly have fun with it. And Howard Hesseman is smarmy & nasty & petty in a quite convincing way as the corrupt city official who is Sutherland's ambitious, conniving brother—as accurate a picture of The Man as you'll find.
Dated? Well, very much of its time, to be sure ... but also a reminder of the more open-minded possibilities that were available then. And also a reminder that they're still available now, though you'll have to work harder to find & sustain them in an increasingly superficial culture. But before all that, it's delightfully tall tale that's worth the telling—highly recommended!

Was haben wir uns amüsiert über Veldini (Donald Sutherland), Eagle (Peter Boyle), Iris (Jane Fonda), Duval and the Kid.
Danke!
