Top customer reviews
After using the trial version of Cubase LE and falling in love with it, I recently decided to make a switch from Logic Pro X to Cubase Pro 8. The one that I bought was the retailed version from Crazy Dave's Music (thank you guys!!!), purchased on Sunday, July 23rd and it was suppose to arrive on Friday, July 29th (using standard checkout via Amazon) but surprisingly, it arrived early instead on Tuesday, July 26th. Anyway the DVDs arrived inside a small cardbox box, brand new and the actual packaging looks exactly as seen in the picture, the size of a Twilight paperback novel.
Inside you'll get:
-two installation discs for Cubase Pro 8 (Disc 1 & Disc 2)
-a USB e-Licenser (please take care of this precious blue child or else you won't be able to use Cubase)
-two pieces of paper: one contains your activation code for Cubase Pro and the other is for trail products (don't throw these away)
-5 extra DVDs which are actually trail version of Groove Agent 4, Halion etc (didn't install them).
-and also an instruction manual for how to set up Cubase Pro & Cubase Artist (the holy grail for installation)
Now, before I decided to buy this product, I was very hesitant after I've read some bad reviews about installing the software itself. Alot of people said that this product is really hard to install and there's no real support etc from Steinberg therefore it made me cautious about buying this product. After going through the installation myself, I actually didn't find any problems with the installation process. It's not technically difficult to install this software (like math or genius IQ required) but it does take patience and a bit of time and dedication to follow precisely what the instruction says. Read the instruction manual that comes in the box because it will help you install the software as it did for me.
Installation Tip for Mac Users (this only works for Cubase that runs on both Mac & PC):
Macbook Pro doesn't come with an external dvd player drive and as somebody who doesnt own one this is a huge problem when you're trying to install Cubase via DVDs. Anyway, one way you can save money and time, is that if you, your friends, or someone in your family owns a PC with a DVD player slot built into their computer and runs on Window, ask if you can borrow their laptop, put the discs in and copy the discs (Cubase installation 1&2) onto a flash drive and then copy Cubase Installation Discs 1 & 2 from your USB onto your Mac and it works. Once you've installed Cubase Disk 1, it will ask that you complete the installation by inserting Disk 2 and when this happens, all you have to do is just double click the Disk 2 you've copied onto your Mac from your USB and it will complete the installation for you.
After you've finished installing Cubase, you'll need to activate your license (this is where you plug your USB e-Lincenser to your MAC/PC and runs the e-Licenser Control Software and activate your license as written inside the manual guide) and register your product online with your My Steinberg account (also written in the manual guide).
Overall, I find Cubase to be one of the best DAWs I've ever used and if you're switching from another DAW -- let's say, Logic Pro X or Garageband -- then I highly recommend downloading the Cubase LE trial and kind of get used to the workflow before you buy the actual product. My advice to new mixers out there who has no experience with mixing whatsoever and wanted to get Cubase is that, every DAW has a Pro and Cons but then it's the mixer's skills that really contribute to making your music sounds good. You may have a good DAW but having a good DAW or equipment does not 100% mean that your music will sound good without the skills necessary to use it. Therefore I advise that you try to practice your mix before you try to upgrade your DAW to something better, watch video tutorials, get advices and play with your effects and if you really want Cubase but has no idea how to mix then start with LE because LE actually already has what most people needs for mixing (like vocals) and then upgrade it to Artist then Pro.
The only disadvantage of using Cubase so far (hence I'm giving it 4/5) is that everytime you want to use the software, you have to plug in the USB e-Licenser and therefore please try not to lose this precious blue child anywhere. Other than that, I love it.
I ordered Cubase 7 Retail with an upgrade to 8 Pro from YRS Midi Systems. What I got was a Cubase AI Controller with Cubase AI 6 that automatically upgraded upon install to AI 8 with an upgrade to Cubase 7.5.. After registering and activating this, I installed the Cubase 7.5 Upgrade. It took a bit of messing around and a visit to the support forums to figure out how to activate it all. You have to get the AI 8 on the elicenser first for 7.5 to recognize there is an upgradable version. But once it does, It automatically upgraded to 8 Pro. Then I went to Steinberg to download the 8. So I did get Cubase 8 Pro, just not directly.
So here's the good part. I got a controller for free. Granted, they don't make it anymore, but it still appears to be supported. And I get a full version of Cubase Pro 8. For a lot less than I would have paid for the full version. It takes a few more steps to install. But it's not difficult. Of course, we won't talk about the hour or two it will take to download 8 Pro. LOL!
I have been using ProTools for many years. But they have changed their licensing process, and now require $200 a year if you want to continue updating. I am currently running 10/11 and I am happy, but if I'm going to have to pay that much, why not switch to something that would be more user friendly and that has something like Chord Assistant. and Intelligent composing - both of which I have been eyeing for a while. ProTools has neither. And buying another program to do it just adds on to the $200.
All DAWs are basically the same when it comes down to it. The plugins included may vary a bit, but they are mostly the same. Yeah, you will hear arguments about which is better. But I have used a number, and it doesn't seem to matter too much in the end. It ends up being personal preference. So I will try this out and hope we get along. :)
There is a learning curve and you will get lost for the first couple of day's, but watch their getting started videos on the tube and you will be amazed at what you can do with another "addition" to your audio toys.
Hope this helps.
