Steinberg UR Interfaces
With Steinberg’s line of USB 2.0 connectivity interfaces, you’ve got it all covered: the UR range comprises a 19” rack-mounted studio solution, a desktop production interface, an ultra-compact mobile unit and an advanced portable production studio — all engineered and crafted to meet the most exacting standards.
Sharing the same heritage as the highly acclaimed MR816 interfaces, the URs house outstanding converters and D-PRE Class-A discrete mic preamps. Each interface is completely adapted to your needs while sharing the hallmarks of the UR range: great build quality, stunning sound and flexible, fully integrated capabilities. Ultra-stable drivers for Mac OS X and Windows mean that the entire UR range supports all major recording software applications.
Guitar Amp Classics
Guitar Amp Classics make extensive use of advanced Yamaha modeling technology. Four amp types with completely different sonic characteristics are provided, CLEAN, CRUNCH, DRIVE and LEAD.
Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip
The Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip consists of a sidechain-enabled compressor and a three-band parametric equalizer. Both EQ and compressor were developed to attain a highly musical sound.
The REV-X built into the UR824, UR28M, UR44 and UR242 is a complex reverb algorithm developed by Yamaha. REV-X features three types of reverb effects: Hall, Room and Plate simulations with reverb time and level control.
D-PRE microphone preamps
The preamp is where sound creation begins in recording, and ultimately determines the quality of your mix. All UR audio interfaces offer D-PRE Class-A discrete mic preamps from Yamaha. The D-PRE is carefully designed to capture all the subtleties and expressiveness of any audio source and is the culmination of years of development by the experienced engineers at the Yamaha Corporation. D-PRE Mic Preamps sound stunning, and the difference is in the design.
D-PRE has a very wide frequency range so that it can handle any music source and it does not overly amplify any specific components of the signal. It’s beautifully tuned to be able to capture the true expression of a given performance or audio source, while leaving flexibility for later editing.

The actual product works phenomenally, though. After all that grueling setup, I am extremely pleased with this interface's performance.
Focusrite, AT2035, & Windows 10 nightmare story!
I experienced issues with the Focusrite Solo (2nd Gen) on my windows 10 machine. It was causing my voice to be robotic and super distorted, my friends would yell at me to fix my mic every 45 minutes. I would have to unplug and replug the device every 45 minutes to fix the issue. I tried the latest drivers and beta drivers, I also disabled a bunch of things through out windows that focusrite recomends with NO luck. Thankfully amazon has a killer return policy and took care of me. I’ve replaced it with a “Steinberg ur12” which is owned by Yamaha and have had 0 issues on Windows 10. Hope this can help someone who’s experiencing issues with there focusrite on windows 10 as it can be a huge headache.
Previously I had an old mixer, which was also used as interface for my guitar, and overall was working ok, but with this one, I get better sound quality; control over the amplification on 2 different Input; and the combo plug allow me to use both a regular jack and the mic plug interchangeably.
Controls are easy to handle, overall the case is metal and very sturdy; no humming even if the box is close to other electrical items. Works like a champ with Cubase (a LE version is included, but now you can get that for free also from the Steinberg website).
I can use both the guitar, using Guitar Rig 5, and my keyboard; and this is really nice, since I have one interface for every single need and fits on the desk perfectly
Cons: headphone jack needs a pre amp, volume is low output.
The knobs are small, the scarlet has a big volume knob.
In this price range, either this or the scarlet will do the job. Maybe the scarlet doesnt work right on Windows 8.1, not sure. Besides that, nothing bad to say about either. I generally use a mic pre on this unit for vocals, that may not be necessary depending on your mic. I'm sure if you use a mic like the SM7b, you'll need a pre amp regardless of your interface.
DONT PLUG IT IN WHEN YOU GET IT AT FIRST. If you get screeching noises it is because windows is installing an older driver.
Go get the drivers from Yamaha/Steinburg and then install them. Then turn on the UR12. Then plug it in.
No screeches since.
That being said, I chose to buy the MKII because I read these (known) issues had been addressed with the new build. I will admit, that some of the residual noise has been reduced, but not enough to keep the product. I replaced it and took a chance on the *gulp* Behringer UMC404HD, and I love it. Seriously.
Some people have had great success with this product, but with my setup, it's a no-go.
