This book is an amazing resource for anyone interested in the battle for the Merville Battery and the role it played in wider campaign for Caen.
I was most interested to discover that despite my own heavy reading on the topic that the Merville Battery housed 100mm Czech made Skoda M. 14/19s and the 75mm howitzers that most sources claimed the battery contained. Strong's excellent research attributes this misconception to the presences of a defective 75mm gun left behind at the battery after its evacuation.
In addition to fascinating interviews from both the defenders and attackers Strong has included a detailed layout of the bunkers as well as an article from the German magazine "Das Reich" about the seesaw battle for control of the battery.
The details of Lt. Steiner's life and career leading up to the pivotal battle brings a very human and often surprising element to the work which is often over looked in most histories today. Strong reminds the reader that all soldiers are men with hopes, dreams, qualities, and shortcomings like ourselves.
This book is a must read for all World War II enthusiasts. Michael Strong presents his readers with the realities of the battle for the Merville Battery as seen through the fog of war and avoids the often too clean and clear cut conclusions seen in most works today.

I recently visited the Merville Battery, so I had a very special interest in the story. The Allies landed on June 5-6, Steiner held out until August 17th.,an incredible accomplishment. The book gives us insight into Lt. Steiner, the person and the soldier. Well documented with photo's and drawings.
I bought a second book for a friend.

A lot of great info but needs more specifics about how it impacted D-day. Doesn't flow well.

A lot of details not found in other sources about both the German side of the action and the facilities themselves. Highly detailed descriptions of all of the bunkers and buildings in the battery area, including interior layouts of the different buildings. This was enough information to create all of the bunkers and buildings using a 3d printer for a personal project.
Answers a lot of the usual questions and is in my opinion a must read if you are interested in this episode of the Normandy Invasion.

Slightly quirky presentation but a fascinating book

The author presents letters and comments plus the results of his own interviews from the German soldiers manning this gun battery at the time of D-Day. These are fascinating but the presentation feels more like the author's notes in preparation for a book than a finished book.Whilst I know that the book is devoted to illuminating "the other side of the hill," I recalled having read about the Allied attack on the battery but couldn't recall the detail. Thus, I would have appreciated an account that interwove both sides' versions of what happened.
Older readers should look out for mention of Jimmy Edwards, the future comedian.
The German Army's reliance on horses to pull a lot of their artillery is in stark contrast to their blitzkrieg image.
The Steiners were anti Nazi in a post-Anschluss Austria and his father was sent to Dachau.

Great account of Normandy Landings as witnessed by Steiner and his men - Steiner consciously ordered his men not to fire on the beaches when they were visited by V.I.P's, possibly Churchill or the King themselves.
