Blog postWhat Feminism Missed Economics tells us the obvious: that when supply goes up, price goes down. And price does not only mean the cost of diamonds or real estate; it also means wages.
In the early 1960s my mother returned to nursing after a break while we children were small. She was the first mom in our neighborhood to pursue a career, but others soon followed. The early adopters of Second Wave Feminism doubled their family income, but when the trend grew and women2 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postA Pandemic Thanksgiving Memorial My mother died on Pandemic Thanksgiving. She spent the last two years of her life in hospice, in a nursing home, and most of the last year of her life cut off from family and visitors. She did not die of the virus. She was blessed to have care staff who moved into the facility and locked themselves away from their own families to keep my mother and the other residents safe. Such a gift cannot be measured. I like to think Mom would have done the same, had ther1 month ago Read more

Blog postThe Fabulous Orgasmic Life of Betty Dodson Betty Dodson was a sexual pioneer who believed that in order to be truly equal, women must be independent from men for their sexual satisfaction. She is famous for her trailblazing work empowering women through masturbation, including her book, Sex for One, and her many hands-on workshops. “The Pleasure is Ours,” an episode of The Goop Lab that features Betty and her business partner Carlin Ross, was filmed when Betty was ninety. Blog postForever 51 The Menopausal Vampire I ran across the new vampire novel Forever 51 The Menopausal Vampire in a list of newly published books online. I’ve now had hot flashes for a quarter of a century, so of course I was intrigued by the premise of a vampire in eternal menopause. What would a menopausal woman with superpowers be like? And why aren’t we all writing about her?
I was even more intrigued when I read the reader reviews for the new novel. Here are samples:

Blog postDare to Dream Madam Vice President
We live in history every day, and some days that truth is crystal clear. As I write this it has just been announced that Kamala Devi Harris, a 56-year-old woman of African American and Indian American ancestry, is Vice President-Elect of the United States. She will be the first woman, the first African American, and the first person of Southeast Asian descent to hold that office. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate than by l2 months ago Read more -
Blog postAnd Now the Days of Writerly Excess
When October has come and gone, when your costume is back in the box and your Jack O’Lantern has grinned its last grin, it’s time for that annual festival of writerly excess, National Novel Writing Month.
If you have ever struggled with your Inner Critic, if she insists that you either formulate the perfect sentence or forget this ridiculous notion of being a writer, give your Critic a whole new job this November: Flogging you3 months ago Read more -

Blog postA Week of Nobel Queens What a week for older women! Poet Louise Gluck, 77, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.” Gluck is a professor at Yale who previously won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Her lifetime of work includes twelve volumes of poetry and several collections of essays on poetry. One of her best known works is the 2006 collection Averno, named for a crater though3 months ago Read more

Blog postWho Says Erotica is Porn? I got into a minor spat with a romance writer one day. She was talking online about how much writing romance means to her as an older woman, which I totally understand. Just like writing erotica, writing romance for older women has that wonderful ability to bring our stories to life, for ourselves and others, and to push back on the nexus of ageism and sexism that plagues us all—especially during the pandemic.
But then my correspondent said: “Rom4 months ago Read more -
Blog postUbuntu – I Am Because We Are After six months of pandemic, it’s clear that this strange time exacerbates fear and brings out the human tendency to distance ourselves, to label one another as “Other”. It is easy to see when a group I belong to is labeled Other. When the health risks to older people are minimized, as in, “The deaths of older people don’t count because they would have died soon anyway.” Or this: “If supplies are scarce, treat the young, treat the able bodied.” As a white woman,4 months ago Read more

Blog postLife in the Third Act with Plague. What it’s like to get what you want in a pandemic I recently read a fabulous article [registration required] by Caitlin Moran with the subtitle “Goodbye, nice, jolly, happy Caitlin. Hello, angry Caitlin.”
Moran’s premise is that women spend most of our adult lives drunk on a biochemical cocktail of estrogen and endorphins, and that the stereotypical angry post-menopausal woman is just waking up to all the crap she’s put up with for decades. Objec5 months ago Read more
