Product description
Stella Glow is strategy RPG for the Nintendo 3DS system developed by Image epoch (Luminous Arc franchise). The game centers around Alto and his childhood friend Lisette as they try to stop Hilda the Witch of Destruction, and features unique "Song Magic." The game will contain English voices, but with the 20+ songs are in their original Japanese, performed by some of Japan's most beloved voice actresses. As most reluctant heroes do, Stella Glow-protagonist Alto starts as a country boy in a small town. One day, he hears a song coming from the forest (which is odd, since song has been absent on the planet for thousands of years), where he discovers the lone Hilda. But after the chance encounter, Hilda reveals she's the Witch of Destruction, determined to destroy the world with her Harbingers. As Hilda is about to destroy Alto's hometown, he and Lisette are rescued by the Royal Knights and whisked back safely to the kingdom. Alto joins the 9th Regiment for the sole purpose of gathering the other Witches to stop Hilda.

So far I'm just 10 hours in, but I definitely don't regret this purchase. Even though I ordered it well after it came out, I still got the launch edition with the extra crap. Like usual, I won't open any of the extras and I'll save them, as well as the box, in the event that it may be worth a good chunk of change if I decide to resell it later.
It's not often that you find a video game on Amazon with 20 or more reviews without a single one or two star rating.
I am continually surprised by the characters and story. The character archetypes you'd expect are all there and the story follows the beats of a typical adventure plot, but all of it has a unique twist that makes it it's own. The characters are each unique and have backstories and faults that make them more three-dimensional. I find myself liking even character types I usually don't - they're individual and interesting enough I'm looking forward to the next conversation/story point with them.
The pace of the story is engaging and brisk, but not rushed. I never felt like things were happening too slowly, but I also never felt like anything was glossed over. In the mission time the plot moves forward and you get good characterization through the build-up to the action. During free time you have scenes between the characters in the city and the option to talk to them to increase friendship/bond. All throughout there are scenes where the villains are up to something that keeps the tension and intrigue going.
The battle system is fun and clearly well thought out. You have a basic attack, then 1 or more (#depends on your bond level usually) special attacks that use SP; the witches also have songs they can cast to give power-ups/transfer an elemental trait, or attack a wide range or deliver a heavy hit once a meter fills up enough. Each character has their own distinct style of fighting and it's fun trying the different attacks and seeing what works in combination with each other better. There's a little cut-scene when the characters attack, different for each individual attack, then it goes back to the overhead view and a meter appears above the character/monster that depletes according to the damage done.
There IS a significant difficulty spike at one point so far- the menu says level 13 is required, but I needed to grind up to level 16-17 to get through it: and even that was only barely. The boss on that mission could one-hit kill nearly all my characters at level 13 on her own - and there was a small legion of the newer, stronger monsters to get through to reach her at all. The npc character you are supposed to defend throwing herself at the enemies and dying (and therefore losing the game) did not help as it made all strategy useless. Ugh. So: Grinding.
Grinding can obviously get rather repetitive in games, but as you need to travel to the different locations/maps (a quick walk over a world map) and the monsters change each time it isn't as bad as other games.
Overall, even without completing it yet I would enthusiastically recommend this to anyone.
Mediocre at best and it's pathetic that atlus released this with their atlus tax when they couldn't be bothered to even fix equipment and items inaccurate translations.

The main story? It really depends. I heard the main story was very well written and that was the only reason I bought the game. But the game makes it very easy to tell that people are hiding something, or that there's a mastermind behind it while the main characters are too stupid to know. This made the story too simple for me to enjoy.
What I enjoyed more was the conversation between allies. During the game you have Mission time and Free time, where the Mission time is like the name suggests, you go out and fight enemies, while Free time gives you some time to converse with your allies. Doing this unlocks new skills, or status increases, so it is worth talking to others. And for Witches, you have another option called "Tuning" which is like battling their shadows; think of Persona 4 where you fight against shadows and grow stronger, it's just like that.
If I have to summarize the game in a few words, I would say Stella Glow is a "slower version of Fire Emblem: Awakening with a small mixture of Persona 4". It is of similar genre, there are character conversations, you have shadows to reveal your true feelings, and there are lots of twists in the story.
The game itself is an underrated masterpiece and every 3DS JRPG fan needs to play this game. It was marketed so poorly as just one of those 'otaku fanservice' games and yet it is so much more than just that. There is so much love and effort put into this tactical RPG from the character personalities, to the music, to the dialogue, to the voice acting, etc. Took me about 55 hours to beat on a first playthrough blind. Amazing game.
There is also LOTS of gameplay and LOTS of voiced dialogue. I'm in over 40 hours of play and I'm not even near the end. Sure, the price of admission is high, but well worth it. Buy now before that game become a 200$ rarity on Ebay.
