If you are looking for the perfect way to introduce the three domains of writing (informative, opinion, narrative) to your students, then Janiel Wagstaff s Stella Writes series is it. In these books, Janiel expertly captures the writing process and what master teachers do so effectively. The text is kid-friendly, engaging, and a level above most books written to teach an educational concept. This is impressive. It s as if you're eavesdropping on one of Janiel s classrooms. And one thing is for sure, you ll leave a better teacher having listened in! Not only are these books ideal for helping students master the Common Core State Standards for writing, but will serve as a great reference tool throughout the year. I can easily picture teachers pulling out one of these books each time students are engaged in a formal writing project and using it to guide them step-by-step through the writing process. What I especially loved about the books are the insights into how skilled writers write what they think about at each step of the process, how they revise, the questions they ask themselves, the time they take to get it right, and other amazing tips tucked so nicely and naturally into each story. Stella Writes is a must-have writing resource for teachers and Stella will quickly become a primary-grade student s favorite writing mentor! --Wiley Blevins, Author, Researcher, Educator. Author
Our poetry wall is filled to the ceiling! I have never had this kind of reaction from my young writers before when writing poetry. As a teacher, I've always dreaded the poetry unit in our reader's anthology and would often skip right over it. Every once in a while I would have a student that would get excited about poetry and write a few poems, but nothing like this. As a teacher, Stella has also inspired me to try some poetry breaks just like Ms. Merkley does in the book. We have a lot of transitions throughout our school day and sometimes they can be a little less than ideal. I decided to read a poem while they transitioned. It worked like a charm. The next day, when we started to transition, one of the students said, Hey, what about our poem. It takes so little effort and the students love it. Now, I try to fit poetry breaks in during the day whenever I can and if I forget the kids remind me. Not only has Stella inspired my students to write poetry, but she has inspired their teacher too. We have a poetry unit coming up in our anthology next week and I am actually looking forward to it. My students have caught the poetry bug and so have I, thanks to Stella. --Natalie Merrill, M. Ed.
I have taught 2nd grade for over 20 years. Writing is something we are wanting our students to be more familiar and comfortable with. These books are adorable and SO instructional friendly. I can hear my many, many second graders through Stella. She sounds 8... I love the reading her 'thoughts'... they sound just like my kids in class. Her questions are ones that they would ask in discussion. I am anxiously waiting to purchase these Stella books. --Lory Evans, Author and Second Grade teacher, Creekside Elementary, blogger Lory s Page, author of One Page Math Games

These books are AMAZING!!!!! I use them with my Kindergartners and with our 5th grade buddies. Students LOVE these books! They speak to students of all grade levels about what it's like to write in the different genres. I come back to them month after month sharing different aspects depending on the needs of my students at the time. Thank you Janiel for introducing my students, my staff and teachers all around the nation to Stella! We LOVE her and You!!!!
