Technical Details

  • Adds convenience to most any headphone that does not provide a local volume control. Plug = 3.5mm, Jack = 3.5mm Length appox. 8 inches
  • Note about Compatibility: FYI, the 3.5mm headphone connection found on this In-Line Volume Cord is based on a standard stereo connection. Unfortunately these days, there are some smart phones, some computers, and a few portable mp3 players that have 3.5mm plugs that are occasionally not compatible with the decades old standard.

Product Description

In-Line Headphone Volume Control Adds convenience to any headphone that does not provide a local volume control. Simply plugs into the sound source and provides a 3.5mm jack for connecting existing headphones. Great for use with audio equipment with unusually high output levels, and for using low impedance headphones with devices designed for higher loads, such as airline in flight entertainment systems.

APPLICATION: I got this because the volume on my Tascam MP-BT1 broke and is stuck on FULL volume! I'm sure I've damaged my hearing with that thing. I recently got the Shure SE215-CL Sound Isolating Earphones but they are just way too loud to use with the Tascam (the Shures are louder than the headphones I had been using with it). Well, that's the perception of the sound. The reality is that the Shures push more midrange and high-midrange frequencies than my other headphones so they're a bit more painful to listen to at full volume. Anyway...So I needed a way to lower the volume.

This definitely does the trick. In fact, it can lower the volume 100%, thus, muting it. As you have probably experienced on cheap radios, sometimes the lowest volume setting still lets some sound bleed through. That does NOT happen with this volume control and I'm super happy about that!

CONSTRUCTION: The overall length is 11" with the middle of the volume dial neatly centered at 5.5" The size the dial and the housing is just over 0.5" diameter. The length of the dial housing along the cable is just about 1.375" so if you have larger hands you may find the dial to be small. The male TRS pin and the female TRS jack seem to be accurately sized to the standard. They fit snugly with the other cables and jacks I have mated them with.

My one concern with this item is that the wire used seems pretty thin compared to the wire on my other 3.5mm TRS cables. You wouldn't think that would be a concern since this is only 11" long but I expect to take this cable "on the go" and maybe even give it some limited use on-stage.

Like most couples in bed, one wants to watch television and the other wants to sleep.
But the sound from the television makes it difficult to nod off.
With most TVs, you can plug headphones and a long cord to an audio-out receptacle.
If the sound in the headphones is too loud, get this control to reduce the volume.

I'm disabled from a car wreck, so i use my Kindle and my MP3 player a LOT. I plug both of these devices into my Kenwood stereo, which requires full volume output from each device. To keep from having to fiddle with the volume of each device, i bought this item, which also saves the female plug on each device from a lot of wear. And it worked great for what i needed for it to do ... for about a month ... then the outer coating of the wire pulled loose from the stress support at one end. I tried taping it togetger with electrical tape, but that was an unsatisfactory attempt at a solution. A great idea, but just not very durable.

Mine didn't work very well or for very long. The wires had no stress relief where they connected to the volume control housing. That is where the wires failed. The replacement that I bought is the Koss VC20 which works better and hopefully will last longer.

When I bought my new Bose earbuds, I decided to not pay the extra thirty bucks to get the version with the microphone and volume control (I have a different earbud for my phone). But that means I had to dig my player out of my pocket every time I wanted to change volume.

These do just the right thing. They plug into the line between your player and headphones, and provide volume control (as well as an extra 10 inches of cord).

I bought a second pair to use with my laptop as an angle plug, since the headphone jack is on the front and my headphones have a straight connector.

(I do confess, I didn't buy them via Amazon, because of the shipping cost).

It works perfectly and does exactly what I wanted it to do. My headphones only have low and high for volume control. To my surprise, my new TV's audio output has no volume control at all. "Low" on the headphones was still way too loud. This little device allows me to use the headphones with the TV.

I was not looking for Audiophile quality at this price point, that being said, I would have to state for under $10.00 this is probably the way to go. In fact this is the first one under $30.00 that I would buy again.
This is an item that is effect by the taste of listener, I am using it at relatively low volume in line with a custom built ANC headphones.

NO NOISE at any volume I can stand, being added by this controller. FOUR STARS is all I could rate it at due to the type of item.
Please note that I follow up on posts that change over time.
If this has helped please click on and let me know. Good Listening!

UPDATE It had problems and separated.

Update 11/3/14 Good while it lasted, did not make it a year, that being said while it worked it did a great job. I still think for the money it is a good item. I am going to try another brand. I am going to add another headphone amp, and both locations will have good volume controls. I am a heavy user of headphones spending on average 8 hrs. a day. I have about 10 pair of cans, the ones I use most are my Audio Technica M-50's for monitor work connected to headphone amp. And my two pair of A/T ANC noise cancelling headphones, these get a work out as I prefer them for digital music. This gear gets dropped, sat on, and lost on a daily basis. I think the abuse and number of hours I got out of this speaks volume's about how good this item is. The failure was a result of getting caught on things and even the slightest movement would result at times changing volume. That is why I am going to use a model with a clip so I can attach it to shirt or whatever. Would I still buy these again, yes but would use them for use with my Tascam portable recorder or when on a plane. At the price I bought them at it cost me about 65 cents a month, well worth it. Good Listening
