When this album of "lost" recordings from a February 15, 1967, session was released in 1995, it truly was an incredible addition to the John Coltrane discography.
Alice Coltrane found the tapes and gave titles to each track, with several pointing "Trane" to the ground-shaking direction of a session which took place one week later; a series of duets with drummer Rashied Ali (perhaps more of a compass to Coltrane's next musical direction) that were posthumously released as the classic "Interstellar Space."
The eight tracks and trio of alternate takes stop the clock at 60:23 and feature "Trane" (tenor/alto sax), Alice Coltrane (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Ali (drums). The title track and its alternate take are spiritually healing, which can be best appreciated with a summer sunrise. Sun Star (both tracks), Offering (previously found on the final Coltrane-approved release, "Expression"), Configuration and Tranesonic - along with the alternate take - include major elements expanded upon during the February 22 session.
What makes the album particularly impressive is how "Trane" was juggling with a number of formats within the studio. And the unique accessibility of the numbers provide hints to the launching pad of something spectacular.
