So, it was a delightful surprise to find out Allan Cole had put this story out on Kindle. It's a very focused, compelling little story, with all the features that make the STEN stories so good. Characters, a puzzle, riddle or problem to solve, and lots of chances for things to go wrong. The great part with this was that, with the exception of a couple of side scenes, which needed to be there, all of the action took place with Sten and his team. You felt their interaction, their trust in one another (even through their differences), and their dedication to making the -right- decision in a VERY tricky situation.
All in all, a great bargain and a great read!
There are 8 volumes extant in the Sten Series (e-book etc etc) and they form a continuing chronicle of one man's life (Sten) and the fates and goals of the other major characters in a multi-galaxy spanning tale of valor and intrigue.
This short piece STEN AND THE STAR WANDERERS is a stand-alone bit, that fits between two of the novels. It features some of the most beloved characters of the series, and hints at the vast universe "out there" yet to be explored.
Further, by introducing the "Star Wanderers" in this particular way, this bit hints at what may become a sequel to Book 8.
The material seethes with potential.
If you like military science fiction, this is where it started. Heinlein, Drake, Cole and Bunch.
The new story fits snugly inbetween the novels. There is adventure, mystery, and blowing things up. The old characters are back and the new story is well worth their return.
It is a good appetizer before the novels or a good dessert after the novels.
This short work is set near the beginning time of the series and depicts Several of the major characters. It has the flavor of the overall series books, and was a refreshing wander down memory lane.
Also good for a short intro to the Sten Universe. If you enjoyed this, you'll love the whole series
