About the Author

Geshe Namgyal Wangchen was born in Tibet in 1934 and educated at Drepung Monastary. In 1959, along with His Holiness the Dalia Lama and 100,000 other Tibetans, he fled the Chinese occupation of his homeland. During the 1980's he began teaching Western students in London, England. He now lives and teaches in the reestablished Drepung Monastery in India.

Some beautiful gems of understanding

While it hasn't been the most revealing book I've read, there are some very thoughtful gems as it seeks to trace a path from scripture to practice. I think there are many ways the understandings in this book can be lived in practice, so the actual meditations are not necessarily as useful as the underlying ideas. But that's okay, even if the particulars of mediation here aren't for you, the ideas presented are pure and they get progressively closer to the truth as the book goes on. The writing in the first few chapters left me not loving the way some of the ideas were expounded upon, but it seems to get better as it goes on.
