A step drill bit, also called a step bit or drill, has various-sized cutting edges that cut larger holes as they progress closer to the tool's shank. Often made from high-speed steel, a step drill may include a coating such as TiN or TiAlN for extended cutting tool life. Step drill bits for metal may be used on a variety of metal types such as aluminum, brass, or bronze. With a coating, they may be used on harder-to-machine materials such as steel, stainless steel, and titanium. A drillbit may have the following dimensions specified: drill bit size, which will list sizes from minimum to maximum as well as increments, and shank diameter. A stepped or step down drill bit is generally used on thin materials, and the maximum material thickness should be indicated. They are available individual bits or in a step drill bit set & tool kit, which may include step bits in a range of sizes. Step drilling is especially useful in applications where hole size needs to be adjustable. Both inch and metric step drills are available and may meet certain specifications such as ISO or ANSI.
