Wow. The subtitle to Donna Goodman's book is "The Complete How-to Book for Christian Writers." Words like "complete" often make me shake my head--but after purchasing "A Step in the Write Direction,"I can attest that this book is indeed a complete guide. I can say without reservation, "If you can only buy one book about writing for the Christian market, this is the book."

"A Step in the Write Direction" is a compilation based on Goodman's many years of teaching, mentoring, and writing for publication. She is a mentor and a friend to writers at all skill levels. I've learned new things and refreshed my memory on many other aspects of writing for publication. I recommend this book for the beginner as well as the intermediate and seasoned writer--it's almost an encyclopedia covering the different genres, marketing, editing, challenges of being a writer, and an appendix that I've already filled with "post-it flags." This book is a reference that I will use regularly. Vie Herlocker

“A Step in the Write Direction: The Complete How-To Book for Christian Writers” definitely is a comprehensive guide that needs to be on the bookshelf of every serious Christian writer today. There are so many topics covered that it’s difficult to pull just a few out and yet portray the depth and scope of this book. Freelance authors in particular will find this to be an extremely valuable tool whether just starting out or having long years of experience. We can all learn new perspectives about writing and here is the proof!

One aspect I found particularly interesting is the section on other sources of income from writing, such as speaking, workshops, and editing. For those who have considered venturing into any of these areas, the author has included many practical tips for launching a career in them. But whether you pen travel articles, write for children, focus on novels, or specialize in nonfiction—if you do any kind of writing this book is for you. Donna’s long years of mentoring and teaching on the subjects do make her uniquely qualified to write this guide and it is well worth the time to read it carefully and then heed every word.

The numerous Appendicies at the end are worth the cost of the book alone: how to use Scripture in your writing, copyright information, Microsoft Word shortcuts, guidelines to form a Christian writer’s group, and income tax tips for writers, to mention just a few. In other words, everything you ever wanted to know about writing. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to fellow writers.

When I read a how-to book, I like to receive instruction from people who intimately know the subject of their instruction. A STEP IN THE WRITE DIRECTION is written with an authoritative voice because Donna Goodrich has faithfully practiced the craft of writing for years.

Whether you are starting out in the Christian publishing field or just looking for new direction and opportunities for your writing, you can find inspiration and insight in the pages of this book. I like the comprehensive nature of this book with details about how to set up a home office or the specifics about writing fiction or nonfiction. I recommend you get this book and profit from this rich source of information.

I met Donna over twelve years ago when she was the speaker at a writer's conference. I thank God for her mentoring, proofreading help, encouragement and speaking to the "potential in me". She can't personally help every writer but every writer can be helped by having this complete resource book on their desk. From the user friendly Contents pages through the Frequently Asked Questions, Advise for a Beginnng Writer and the many Appendix pages, you will find a life time of research and information. Donna truly has reached out to multitudes of writers with her knowledge, experience and mentoring through this "must have" book. Thank you Donna, I wish that I had this book twenty years ago!

Your book isn't just for Christian writers, Donna. It is a how-to for anyone thinking of writing, right down to "In the beginning." A truly fine book, one every writer should have on their bookshelf. Someone had to write it, and you did. There really isn't another writer's book out there with the get-started punch to succeed that "A Step in the Write Direction" has.
