Product Description

Product Description

This sandbox may be "Crabbie," but toddlers are nothing but cheerful when they climb in for hours of outdoor fun.

Amazon.com

Kids won't get pinched in this plastic sandbox, even though it's designed to look like a big crab. Its somewhat rounded shape takes up a space that measures 4 by 4 feet (and the inside space measures just over 3 by 3 feet), and it holds up to 300 pounds of play sand. Both the box and the matching sculpted lid (or shell) are molded from single pieces of red plastic. At the front, the big tucked-in claws frame two crabbily prominent white eyes. There's no drain hole, so be sure to put on that shell when it rains. --Richard Farr

My kids received this 2-3 years ago as a present from Grandma. It has held up wonderfully! Up to 4 kids fit in it just fine and the lid helps to keep out pesky bugs. The kids are able to sit on the "hands" of the crab, or IN the sand. They have also decided the lid can be used as a toy just as much as the sandbox itself! The lid has held up to being bent backwards numerous times and ridden down the hill in our backyard! I highly recommend this one - it stands up to kids and keeps the sand in & the bugs OUT!

We have had our sand box for about 3 years. It stands up to very hot temperatures and the lawn trimmer! It is very sturdy and the kids love it. I highly recommend it.

Wow, sandboxes can be expensive! I looked at all of the sandboxes before I bought this one. The little tikes frog sandbox was the most inexpensive one I could find, but it could only really fit 2 toddlers in it. I didn't want to spend too much on a sandbox, but didn't want to go cheap in the material as well. So I went the next step up, to this one. It is really sturdy, and my 2yr old son can sit on it's claws, or sit inside. The lid is a little flimsy, but it closes well, and I don't have to worry about "little intruders." And it can hold more than 2 toddlers so he can invite his friends over for some sun and sand.

This sandbox was large enough for my toddler and preschooler to play in. I like the lid because it keeps cats and debris out. It keeps flying off in the wind, though. We live in Southern California and it's not always windy, but we do get gusts and sometimes, it's windy. My husband put a brick on top to keep it from blowing off. It worked, but then the lid now has a big dent in it from the weight of the brick.

The lid doesn't keep snails and ants out. The snails come in, dry out and die, then the ants come in to eat up the snails. So, we have dead snails and ants filling up the sandbox.

PROS:
+ good size for my preschooler and toddler to play together
+ it has a lid to keep cats out and the sand somewhat cleaner

CONS:
- the lid keeps blowing off
- the lid doesn't seal the box enough to keep out snails

SUMMARY
It's not a bad sandbox but it can use some improvements. I quickly realized it was a mistake to buy a sandbox, because I did not like the sand being tracked all over the house. But some people don't mind that. Just beware that the lid doesn't stay on well in windy conditions and snails are able to crawl in even with the lid on.

First off, this is really a great little sandbox. For the first few days, I couldn't pull the kids away. And if you *use the lid everytime* (which you won't), everything will be great.

Unfortunately when you don't replace the lid and the sand is exposed to the elements, water gets into the sandbox and there's nowhere for it to drain - resulting in an unsanitary sludge. Additionally, if you have any stray cats in your neighborhood you've just purchased a nice community litter box for them all to enjoy (how thoughtful of you!).

I just got done shoveling out a winter's worth of disgusting, slimey sand sludge/litter from our kids' sandbox. It was wet, stinky, and had a greenish tint to it (perfect for St. Patricks Day I suppose). Without a drain in the bottom to let water escape, it gets really disgusting.

I do plan to clean it and reuse it and 'try' to have the kids replace the lid, but I doubt the lid will get a chance to serve its purpose. I think a regular sand 'pit' might be better - at least it'll allow water to drain away and naturally clean the sand.

***UPDATE*** I've drilled a few 'drain' holes and that appears to have resolved the issue. Too bad Step2 didn't think of this first.

I just purchased this sandbox after much research....And it is a BIG hit with my 20 month old..All his toys fit inside under the dome lid while not in use. He stood on top of the lid along with a friend and the lid popped in but it popped right back out and you cannot even tell what happened...This is the best price sandbox for the money..Recommend it highly!!

This sandbox is a fantastic buy! We got it for my 2-year old last year, and she loves it. It's roomy enough for two or three, and the lid, though it may appear flimsy, is fantastically durable and, as long as it's fitted properly on top of the box, will NOT blow off. In fact, the second night we had it, there was a huge rainstorm with lots of wind: I thought sure there would be a big mess in my backyard, but was I shocked in the morning to find the whole box intact and nothing but dry sand under the lid! Amazing. This is a great toy, and very popular with my daughter and her friends. The color has not faded a bit that I can tell from last season.

My daughter loves this cute sandbox. It runs a bit bigger than the step2 turtle sandbox, which makes it nice when we have other little ones over for playdates. It's not quite roomy enough for the two of us (parent and child) to sit in the box together, but the "front claws" make for a nice little seat. For the most part the lid does it's job. It's kept water, snow, and smalls animals out, but not insects.
