One critique, it is a PAIN to set up. It has about 20 steps and the holes for screws are not pre-drilled. Allot at least two hours for set up because forcing a three year old to wait for their present is not fun. Also, the stove top is a bit slick and the pots and pans tend to slide off.
--It's very cute, and the sticker-detailing really adds a lot.
(You'll need to apply the stickers yourself. My 10 year old daughter did a fantastic job!)
--It takes up less space than I thought it would. It's still going to take up more space than a kitchen that only has a one-sided play area, but if you have the room, I think it's worth it!
--The kids LOVE the cash register!
--The side with the clear plastic "case" for pastries and whatnot is really cute.
--ASSEMBLY: Save yourself a lot of time... ignore the little screwdriver that's included for assembly, and grab your power drill! Even then, you may need to determine for yourself what the best placement of holes might be for a snug fit. The corner of ours (where the two main sections join together, is not quite right. Perhaps someday we'll take it apart and re-do it, but for now, it's fine. Not perfect by any means...
--ACCESSORIES: The plastic food is okay, but it's not the greatest I've ever seen. However, it's small and fits in the pots and "basket" containers really well.
--OVEN DOOR: The oven door will not stay shut. It's not warped or anything; it just won't stay. To remedy this, I used one side of adhesive Velcro (the scratchy side with the micro-loops). I put under the brown plastic where the top of the silver door closes. At first, I tried it using both sides of the Velcro, but the hold was too tight and strong for my toddler. However, just the extra width of the one strip of Velcro is enough to keep the door closed. (If it wears down in the future, I'll add the corresponding strip on the top of the silver oven door.)
--BATTERY PLACEMENT: I think the battery placement for the stove light and the stove are both in inconvenient places for when you need to change the batteries... However, it does keep the battery components away from your children. (There are 3 things needing batteries: stove light, stove top, and cash register.)
OTHER MODIFICATIONS/ADDITIONS WE MADE:
--I bought a small pack of black, adhesive 18" strip of Velcro. I used to vertical strips to secure the cash register to the counter top. It can still be removed, of course, and it is less frustrating for the little ones when they are using it. I'm also going to super-glue the black attachment where the cash register's red scanner rests. Otherwise, it always ends up in a toy bucket, apart from the set.
--I also put a strip of Velcro on the credit card (on the top of the card's backside.) Then I put a matching Velcro strip on the side wall of the inside of the pastry shelves.
--I'm also planning on putting a big key ring on the small yellow cash register key, which keeps getting lost. Then it can hang from one of the little hooks above the kitchen's little sink.
***ALSO: WHEN PLACING THE VELCRO, I PUT THE "SOFT" SIDE OF THE VELCRO ON THE COUNTERTOP FOR THE REGISTER, AND I USED THE SOFT SIDE ON THE CREDIT CARD. That way, their little hands and fingers aren't getting poked, and their clothes aren't getting snagged. (I'm pretty sure that just made me sound really OCD! Ha ha! I'm not... I just don't like scratchy surfaces, and it just made more sense to me!) ;)
--We also bought the Melissa & Doug ice cream parlor set~ wooden set with magnetic hold. It's really cute, and we got a great deal since we bought it at a craft store with a 40% off coupon! I'm sure there will be many accessory additions as the years progress!
Well... long review, but I hope it might help someone else make a great kitchen set even better! I know it'll be a toy that my kids enjoy for many years to come!
