Stepfamily Therapy: A 10-Step Clinical Approach 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Over the last 30 years, systemic approaches to family therapy have been largely successful at treating even the most intractable problems in family functioning. However, stepfamilies have long proven a particular challenge for family therapists. Recent research has confirmed that, given their unique dynamics, stepfamilies are vulnerable in a way that is distinct from typical "first-families," leaving them often resistant to traditional family therapy techniques.

In this book, Scott Browning and Elise Artelt integrate clinically validated interventions within an original theoretical framework for stepfamily therapy. They envision the stepfamily as comprised of subsystems, a series of overlapping relationships between individuals. This key insight enables clinicians to divide the stepfamily into more manageable units and plan treatment accordingly.

The authors guide readers through their 10-step model, emphasizing techniques that range from the conceptual — determining the unique structure of the stepfamily to help guide treatment — to more concrete interventions, from identifying and encouraging empathy, to identifying and challenging unhelpful beliefs, and assisting in work with co-parents. The importance of extended family members is stressed, as is the necessity of understanding and valuing racial, ethnic, and sexual diversity within stepfamilies. The ultimate goal is positive communication between family members, with subsystems that are fully integrated into a functioning and happy stepfamily.

As the first full, length investigation of clinical treatment with this important but underserved population, Stepfamily Therapy is a landmark publication in the field.

I found this book very interesting because not only was the field discussed, but the approach suggested was very well supported. I believe that the sub-system perspective, while not new, was more clearly articulated as to its benefits than I had read before. I found the case examples helpful and I thought the book was sophisticated and written by authors who clearly know the difficulties faced by many stepfamilies.

This book is a comprehensive look a the treatment of step-families (A population that is criminally ignored in most literature). It provides a 10 step approach to the treatment of step-families that both novice and advanced therapists would find incredibly useful. The authors clearly articulated an approach to working with these families and also provided clear case examples to better comprehend this approach to treatment. I would recommend this book for both those well-seasoned therapists and those just starting out in the field and looking two use a systems approach to therapy.

This is a really comprehensive and practical approach to working with stepfamilies. The emphasis on working with subsystems makes complicated situations in stepfamily therapy appear much more manageable. This book is also really well-written, thoroughly researched, and includes many practical examples. I would recommend it to all therapists, including those working with individuals from stepfamilies who may also benefit from systemic conceptualizations and interventions.

The authors clearly and eloquently articulated a sophisticated clinical approach to work with the unique culture of stepfamilies. The book provided a distinct 10-step approach to effectively treat stepfamilies by illustrating the complexities of this type of family system. More specifically, the authors of the book described building a stepfamily with one subsystem at a time bringing out the most systemic issues. The authors are brilliant in focusing on the entire collection of subsystems that truly allows for movement towards stepfamily integration. The case examples highlighted how to put theory into practice in an informative and practical way. As a therapist in the field, I can attest that this book will expand your systemic thinking. It is a true masterpiece.
