I am an avid reader, and like most people, I have favorite authors. On the fiction side, two would be Ray Bradbury and Dan Reynolds. Both have the ability to take a seemingly normal setting and skew it in such a way that there is a very plausible backdrop to an increasingly interesting parallel universe. In this case, Stephen Carter could be any typical 12-year old boy with the usual adolescent concerns and pastimes, i.e. baseball, bullies, first girlfriend, etc. After an accident at Hawkins' Mine, he is drawn into another world populated with subterranean inhabitants threatened by a rebel force. The subterraneans (Elementals)look to Stephen for his help in preventing the evil Pravus's ascent to power and to lead them back to their ancestral home. He is assisted by special abilities that he is given and able to refine through telepathic communication. Those same special abilities needed for survival in the Elemental's world are used effectively and humorously in Stephen's other life in the small town of Leadville, Colorado. The parallel stories are interwoven well. This book will draw you in and have you eagerly anticipating a sequel.

I do a great deal of reading in my spare time, and there are not many books that I find entertaining enough to read cover to cover without putting down, this was one such book. I found the story to be engaging (even as an older reader), with enough substance to keep readers wanting more with each page turn. I can't wait for the sequel, and I definitely recommend picking up a copy of this book!

I don't find myself with a ton of spare time to read, so when I do, it has to captivate me in the first few pages or I am on to something else. I was surprised when Stephen Carter held my attention from the very first page. I found myself not wanting to put it down. It is a great story for young or old. I have recommended it to others and have given it as a gift. I'm excited to read the sequel. I have since read other books by this author. He is a very diverse writer. I like that and will be continuing to watch for anything else he writes.

I had read Dan's first 2 books and knew this one would be very different. I must admit after the first chapter I was thinking "Oh Boy" this book is not for me. But I stayed with it and boy am I glad I did. Buy it for your kids and then read it yourself when they are done. A book the whole family can enjoy. Great story!
