Stephen Hawking: A Biography Paperback – Illustrated, October 31, 2007

Enhance your purchase
Stephen Hawking is arguably the most famous physicist since Albert Einstein. His decades-long struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), combined with his singular brilliance as a cosmologist, has fascinated both the public and his colleagues in science. In this engagingly written biography, Kristine Larsen, a physicist and astronomer herself, presents a candid and insightful portrait of Hawking's personal and professional life. Avoiding the hero-worship sometimes found in popular works on Hawking, Larsen emphasizes that Hawking is first and foremost a scientist whose work has made significant contributions to our understanding of the nature and origins of the universe. Writing in nontechnical language for the lay reader, Larsen clearly explains Hawking's complex scientific accomplishments, while telling the story of his challenging life.Topics include Hawking's early lack of focus as a college student; the impact of ALS on his career and personal life; his groundbreaking work on radiating black holes; his later cutting-edge theories of black holes, cosmology, and the anthropic principle; the amazing publishing success of A Brief History of Time; and his status as a pop icon and spokesperson for the interplay of science and society.Larsen situates Hawking's sometimes-controversial work within the broader context of scientific peer review and public debate, and discusses his personal life with compassion, respect, and honesty.

This is a very good book about one of the most brilliant mind of our time. It is a fascinating insight into Hawking's life. It is inspirational in that with all he has and is going through personally, he is still a major force in the field of Physics.
Very well written.

This book is well written, and informative. I enjoyed it. Only down side is trying to understand the theories that Hawkings and others deal with. Black holes and the like. The explanations were decent, just to far out there for me to grasp. Do not let this stop you from reading this book though, as the idea is to understand the man and his life, more so than the theoretical physics.

oh for a black hole to throw myself into after this!

I find the life and work of Professor Hawking fascinating - hence this purchase. However, this book shows the perils of buying online. If I had looked at it in a shop I would have hastily put it back on the shelf! I waded through three chapters before throwing it to the ground in disgust. Why? It is a biography of an English icon but not only does it read like rehashed sentences from other biographies but, most off-putting of all, is written by an American for Americans and every teensy bit of common knowledge is described to the nth degree as if revealing some arcane mystery. I had to suppress several small screams of anguish!!
I was going to say I hated it but felt that was a bit mean. I am sure some people will like it. I think I will donate my copy to a charity shop!
