The Greatest 19th Century American Short Stories
Nov 1, 2016
$0.99
The 50 greatest 19th Century American short stories were determined by a new ground-breaking ranking system. Each story was awarded points for every appearance in an important literary anthology, database, or website. Rather than one person's opinion, the stories in this collection are the result of a consensus of literary scholars and readers over the past century. Over a century has passed since the end of the 19th Century, and the literary dust has settled to a large extent on the greatest American stories. They have been ranked 1-50 according to their relative point totals. Many of the stories are familiar to readers of American Literature with perhaps a few surprises, with some ranking higher or lower than expected. The criteria for inclusion: Fictional short stories written by American authors; Original publication date between January 1, 1801 through December 31, 1900.

I’ve written dozens of manuscripts in cafés. I found it a matter of convenience at first, and after a while, I realized I did my best writing in cafés, so I continued. Magic happens when I write in cafés. Creative ideas spring to mind—plots, characters, dialog—from out of nowhere and I insert them in my books.
Somehow, cafés facilitate literary inspiration. And many famous authors agree. J.K. Rowling is said to have written much of the Harry Potter books in cafés. And Ernest Hemingway wrote his early stories in Parisian cafés in the 1920s. I’m not sure I feel any sort of connection with Hemingway and the other Paris writers of a century ago (F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ford Maddox Ford, James Joyce) just because I write in cafés, but I’m hoping some of their literary magic will rub off on me—despite the intervening century and my location on another continent 4,000 miles removed from Paris.
Along the way to writing my manuscripts, a few scattered oddities presented themselves for my attention. Strange events didn’t restrict themselves to the pages of my stories and they are described herein. This book contains my own personal experiences in cafés, my thoughts about them, what they mean to a writer like me, how I write in cafés, my reminiscences, and my advice for other writers or readers.
Although much of this book is autobiographical, I am still unsure if this work ultimately should be considered fiction or nonfiction—the reader, as always, is the final decider. My entire life won’t be found within my pages. There is nothing from my childhood, for example. It’s a tunnel-vision account of a narrow slice of me—my thoughts about writing and my time spent in cafés. I’ve left out all the salacious aspects of my life for another book.
Some of these essays first appeared on the internet in different forms, but I’ve revised and revamped all for the purpose of this book. What you have in your hands is part biography, part advice, part boasting, and part I’m gonna be a big writer, wait and see.
Leading each chapter is a short “Textual commercial” as a way of introducing the contents and describing my thoughts about it and what my intentions were (or are, if it’s totally new) in writing it. In this era of Every Man a Book Self-Publisher, a writer must campaign for himself, advertise himself, create and star in commercials about himself—both graphic and textual. He must impress upon the public the highlights of his own personality, and urge them to care, and to eagerly await his next book.
The strange attraction of cafés for writers, and writers for cafés, as if they need each other, and give each other what each must have, is a symbiotic relationship, but a dangerous one as well. It’s a dangerous idea, writing in cafés, because a pleasant environment can be reversed in a flash, leaving the wordsmith unable to compose anything of value as a result of variables he can’t control. But I find it’s worth the risk, and the stellar literary results of café-induced manuscripts can’t be denied.
This work is about 65,000 words in length. Several photographs are included.

Daybreak: A Dystopian Science Fiction Tale

Rivenlann is a world that has known only darkness and the thousand gentle stars in the night sky. The advanced Aarpions live on one landmass and dominate the primitive Towahs who reside across the sea on the other.
An ancient prophesy of the Towahs called the Day of Reversal they believe is expected soon, though the Aarpions dismiss it. According to the prophesy, a bright god will suddenly appear in the sky and never leave, bringing cataclysmic changes in the relationship between the two cultures. Readers experience the fallout of the event through the eyes of Aarpion scientists, their political leader, and the Towahs. One side sees the bright star and the end of night as an answer to their prayers while the other believes it heralds the death of their culture. The Aarpions ask themselves how to survive under the new reality while the Towahs’ behavior suggests intrinsic changes have occurred in their traditional thinking.
“Daybreak” explores the human’s psyche’s ability to cope with calamitous changes in the world and the effort to find a way to survive in a completely different environment.
This work is about 9,000 words in length. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

The Flurry Abduction
Jun 26, 2015
$0.99
The biggest intelligence theft in history. Ted Flurry, A young IT analyst, stole 2 million National Security Agency classified documents. He fled to Moscow and then began releasing the NSA's secrets to the world. The President of the United States is furious. He wants Flurry brought to justice. But Russia has permitted to stay and refuses to hand him over. The president wants his national security staff to draft a plan to send a team to Moscow to kidnap Flurry and bring him back to the United States for trial.
Flurry is beloved by many for exposing intrusive government surveillance on private citizens and forcing governments to confront their Big Brother snooping that ostensibly is designed to fight terrorism but catches innocent citizens in its net.
Like Captain Ahab obsessed with Moby Dick, the president becomes obsessed with capturing Flurry. His top advisers work up a plan to send an abduction team to Moscow to get Flurry, but will it succeed? And what happens if it doesn't? What will the president of Russia think of a plan by the US to violate their sovereign territory?
Reminiscent of the Ed Snowden case, The Flurry Abduction is a timely story ripped from the headlines.
