Designed to liberate you from batteries and chemicals, the SteriPen Sidewinder Water Purifier relies on hand-power and ultraviolet light to remove 99.9 percent of water born pathogens. This long-life, storable water purifier is ready for situations whenever the fresh water supply is disrupted. Well suited for camping, hiking, backpacking, traveling, or emergency use, the Sidewinder comes with the SteriPen Pre-Filter to remove sediment and particulate and a BPA-free Tritan water bottle.
SteriPen Sidewinder Water Purifier:
With the Sidewinder, you can crank up safe drinking water anywhere, anytime--simply fill it, crank it, and drink it. The first portable ultraviolet (UV) water purifier that requires no batteries available, the SteriPen Sidewinder purifies one-liter of water in 90 seconds. Featuring SteriPen's UV system that destroys waterborne bacteria, viruses, and protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium, the Sidewinder offers a usable life of 8,000 one-liter water treatments.
The SteriPen Pre-Filter is designed to filter out particulates and sediment from your water before you apply the UV purifier. The Pre-Filter has a 4x4-micron filter screen that sifts sediment and small particulate matter out of the water. The screen is held within a cartridge with an air vent at the top and allows for either pour through or immersion methods to filter the water. Once the water is cleared, the water purification process employed by the SteriPen UV water purifier will be more effective.

About SteriPen Ultraviolet (UV) Water Treatment:
The ultraviolet (UV) water treatment method has now been used for over one hundred years, and is currently used to purify drinking water by some of the largest cities in North America, Europe, and Asia, including Seattle, Washington and Tempe, Arizona. Ultra violet light is also used by bottled water manufacturers to purify their source water.
The EPA officially recognized the use of UV water treatment as a proven, viable technology in 1996. In a simple but effective process, UV purification destroys over 99.9 percent of harmful microorganisms in drinking water. The UV energy emitted by the light is absorbed by the cells within potentially harmful microbes. The UV energy breaks down the cells' ability to reproduce DNA--making it impossible for them to reproduce and make you sick.
Thousands of outdoor enthusiasts all over the world have trusted SteriPen for many years. Introduced to hikers and campers at REI in 1999, Time Magazine named the SteriPen one of the "Best Inventions of the Year" in 2001. SteriPen's speed, effectiveness, and portability have impressed end users and media alike. Backpacker Magazine, Newsweek, and the Today Show have featured SteriPen as a powerful, user-friendly alternative to pumps, chemicals, and filters.
SteriPen products have been tested by the Water Quality Association (WQA) against the US EPA Microbiological Water Purifier Standard. SteriPen has received the WQA's Gold Seal, certifying that SteriPen purifies water safely and effectively.

First, this thing is noisy, and the noise is the grating whine you would expect from a small dynamo. Not a deal breaker, but it does disturb the pacific atmosphere of a Hawaiian trial. There is a reason the demo video does not feature the sound of the cranking. I much prefer the silence (or light sloshing) for the battery powered model.
Second, although the Sidewinder is not heavy, it is large. I didn't realize that this would be a factor until I stuffed it in my pack. It occupies a good deal of precious pack volume, whereas the battery powered model could be stowed in a side pouch like any water bottle.
This is probably an ideal product if you are planning on going somewhere with poor water and remote supplies, like missionary or Peace Corps work. But, for a hike, I would recommend going with a battery model and packing extra batteries or perhaps a solar re-charger.
The product arrived fine - it took me a bit of time to figure out how to assemble it (the filter part especially is a bit tricky) but I eventually got it to work. I've been using it for 3 weeks now, and it is a pretty awesome product. Getting the green light to come on actually takes more like 2 minutes of cycling rather than the 90 seconds specified in the manual which can get your arms pretty tired (just think of it as a mini-workout for your arms!), but I have not gotten sick and the bottle itself is a nice bottle to carry around (handle on the lid is convenient).
you have got to want that water! it takes a lot of cranking to make it work! but it does work.
it would have been great if they could have made a way for it to use other power sources
like the power plug in my truck or my solar panel or even a plug in adapter
