I have just a few problems with the unit though; first, the shape of it (and the placement of the water sensor) make it impossible to use with a standard small water bottle like a Sigg or disposable bottle. It seems like the design could be easily made to work with those kinds of bottles, so the fact that it doesn't is a little frustrating. If you plan on using this, you'll have to use wide-mouth bottles. My second problem with the unit is the LED light - it seems like a silly thing to include, though I guess it's always nice to have an emergency backup light. The problem is that the light is activated by moving it in a certain pattern (not with a switch) and so on at least one occasion I found that it turned itself on inside my pack. That's bad for battery life, and could lead to a situation where the purifier isn't able to do its job. Finally, the neoprene case that it comes with left marks on the unit after only minimal use. It's only a cosmetic issue, but it shouldn't happen at all.
Overall I'd recommend the Steripen to anyone looking to some camping or travelling abroad - the safety and convenience are a great combination.
The trick is to have a cup big enough to make it worth your time to sterilize the water so my solution was I cut a large plastic water bottle in half and sterilized about 1 litre each time and kept it in the room. This thing works like a charm and it's nice to have at the house for local water emergency purposes too. I will use this on every international trip.
On top of that, a lot of the time stores are closed. If you run out of water in the evening, you're simply out of luck until the next morning when you can head to the store and pick up more. With the steri pen around, I always knew that I'd have water when I needed it.
Now this thing doesn't come without its drawbacks. It takes a while to sterilize water. It's about a minute and a half for a half liter, and you should be drinking at least 2 liters per day. It also needs a wide-mouthed container that is either a half a liter or a liter so that you can fit the steri pen in and stir it around. A standard water bottle isn't usually going to do the trick. But despite that, it's still an enormously useful and economic tool that I would say any serious traveler should have in their daypack at all times.
A rugged outdoor small padded case would be a big plus for this unit. It won't take much abuse in the outdoors; & to valuable to risk damage.
