I go camping quite a bit, but the main reason I bought this unit was for overseas travel where the water supply is not 100% reliable. I have to say after taking this on a recent trip, it worked incredibly well and was very easy to use. The battery lasted the whole two weeks I was abroad and I probably sterilized a few dozen liters of water over the course of that time. I'd happily take this camping with me (though being a safe camper I'd probably want to bring some kind of non-electronic backup like purification tablets or a basic filter).

I have just a few problems with the unit though; first, the shape of it (and the placement of the water sensor) make it impossible to use with a standard small water bottle like a Sigg or disposable bottle. It seems like the design could be easily made to work with those kinds of bottles, so the fact that it doesn't is a little frustrating. If you plan on using this, you'll have to use wide-mouth bottles. My second problem with the unit is the LED light - it seems like a silly thing to include, though I guess it's always nice to have an emergency backup light. The problem is that the light is activated by moving it in a certain pattern (not with a switch) and so on at least one occasion I found that it turned itself on inside my pack. That's bad for battery life, and could lead to a situation where the purifier isn't able to do its job. Finally, the neoprene case that it comes with left marks on the unit after only minimal use. It's only a cosmetic issue, but it shouldn't happen at all.

Overall I'd recommend the Steripen to anyone looking to some camping or travelling abroad - the safety and convenience are a great combination.

I bought this steripen for a trip to Zambia. I used it to provide an extra measure of security for the water I drank and used to brush my teeth. I did not use it while camping or on any truly questionable water. The steripen worked great and I never needed to charge it on my trip. It saved me money by reducing the amount of bottled water I needed to buy. A couple of folks I traveled with who did not use the steripen had some stomach upset and I was fine on the whole trip. I'm glad I bought this. I kept the steripen in my carry on bag and security never questioned it.

I wanted to love this product but it simply would not hold a charge. After reading more about it, that seems to be common with this model. I charged it the day before we left for an 8 night camping trip and on day 2 tried to use it and... nada. Returned it and ordered the adventurer which uses batteries and got amazing reviews for reliability.

I bought this sterilizer for an international trip to Turkey. I don't trust the International hotel tap water even though they always say "it is filtered", and I'm always running out of water in the hotel. I don't want to buy the expensive hotel water bottles not to mention the waste of all the plastic bottles. So in the middle of the night when I'm always thirsty this was the perfect companion I used it almost every day with great results.
The trick is to have a cup big enough to make it worth your time to sterilize the water so my solution was I cut a large plastic water bottle in half and sterilized about 1 litre each time and kept it in the room. This thing works like a charm and it's nice to have at the house for local water emergency purposes too. I will use this on every international trip.

I picked up the steri pen because I knew I'd be traveling for a number of months in countries that didn't have clean tap water. I had been in a number of countries like this before, and it was a huge hassle to always lug around giant jugs of water, and constantly be in and out of the store picking up drinking water. Not to mention expensive -- you will rarely if ever find a bottle of water for less than $1. So if you plan on traveling in countries that don't have potable water for more than a month or two, this thing will pay for itself and start generating profits.

On top of that, a lot of the time stores are closed. If you run out of water in the evening, you're simply out of luck until the next morning when you can head to the store and pick up more. With the steri pen around, I always knew that I'd have water when I needed it.

Now this thing doesn't come without its drawbacks. It takes a while to sterilize water. It's about a minute and a half for a half liter, and you should be drinking at least 2 liters per day. It also needs a wide-mouthed container that is either a half a liter or a liter so that you can fit the steri pen in and stir it around. A standard water bottle isn't usually going to do the trick. But despite that, it's still an enormously useful and economic tool that I would say any serious traveler should have in their daypack at all times.

Unit is made with glass and will need protection in the outdoors; I bought 2 of these units one battery operated; 1 that recharges on USB cable. Been using the rechargeable more; Takes a little time to get used to using the light.

A rugged outdoor small padded case would be a big plus for this unit. It won't take much abuse in the outdoors; & to valuable to risk damage.
