I've bought two orders of these bins, because nothing else of this capacity fit my budget. They work, but they're just so darn flimsy I'm afraid to stack them. I've heard if you fill them up right to the top before stacking they'll hold more weight as the contents support the lid, but I find myself worrying about it and using lots of additional padding and then deciding against stacking after all and trying to figure out better solutions.
I'm disappointed because after such a positive experience with the Sterilite 17631706 27 Quart/26 Liter ClearView Latch Box, Clear with Sweet Plum Latches, 6-Pack and how STURDY they are I was hoping the brand carried over that same quality with these. Alas, it's not the case.
If not stacking, then these work fine. The sides are sturdier than the lid. The three I placed on the top shelf of the closet filled with lightweight, bulky items do save me a huge amount of space. So, a star for that.
But, I'm the kind of person who utilizes all available surfaces and goes vertical with storage. And while these currently do the job well enough for the moment, I keep catching myself about to put moderately heavy items on top and stacking continuous to be a precarious experiment. I plan to get something better just as soon as I can.
The real weakness appears to be in the corners, which were knocked in and splintered (and yet the shipping container was ok -- how fragile are these things?) However two also had splits in these sides. There were shards of broken plastic all over the inside to of shipping box.
Because I had no intact ones to use in comparison, I can only make the observation that these seem make of a thinner plastic then the ones I have that were purchased at the bullseye big box store.
I decided to order from Amazon because I didn't want to have to buy buy them in a brick and mortar store, load them into my car and haul them home. Instead I had to pack these back up, load them into my car and haul them to UPS to return them. Not a good deal.
They arrived in excellent condition with no damage or imperfections even though there is no padding in the shipping box.
What I like about this design is that the lid is a latch type and not a snap on lid. I think this is very useful for this size container because you will probably be filling it up completely and it will get heavy. The latch type handles and lid also feel very comfortable.
The only thing I want to point out for those of you who think 70-quarts is a lot is that these don't look as big as I thought. I think this is because the base is smaller than the top. I'm certainly glad I didn't buy a smaller size. Actually the size is perfect for my needs but I thought 70-quarts would be a little larger.
I plan on buying a few more cases as I am satisfied with them.
I recommend them for your storage needs. I want to point out that if you are going to fill them with heavy items and then stack them, you should fill them completely so that the contents are filled to the top so that the lid has no slack. Even if you fill these with heavy items but you don't fill them completely, once you stack them, the heavy weight will warp the lids and could possibly crack them. So what I am saying is fill them so that when you put the lid on there is no give when you push on the center of the lid. Just follow that simple step and you will not have any problems as the plastic bin itself is of very high quality.
EDIT: 8/31/11 I noticed the price is now $79.99. When I said "Priced Competitively" I meant only @ $54. $80 seems a bit steep so I would wait till they come down. I've also seen this model sold at Target for $12.99 each.
