What is Cubic Zirconia?
Cubic Zirconia is a stone so optically close to diamond that most jewelers cannot tell the difference between a CZ and a diamond with the naked eye. The man-made stone is virtually flawless whereas most diamonds have internal inclusions or external blemishes. It is a high quality synthetic gemstone which imitates the appearance of diamonds. Cubic zirconia is zirconium oxide (ZrO2), a mineral that is extremely rare in nature. Synthesized CZ is much less expensive than diamond, optically flawless and can be created in a variety of different colors.
How Does CZ Compare to Diamond?
The overall brilliance and fire of quality CZ stones is equal to that of diamond to the untrained eye. Cubic zirconia can be evaluated using the same qualities that diamonds and other gemstones are graded by: the Four Cs (color, clarity, cut and carat weight). Cubic Zirconia is a virtually flawless equivalent to a diamond on the clarity chart. CZ can be made entirely colorless, equivalent to a perfect score on the color grading scale of diamonds. The biggest difference is that cubic zirconia is 70% heavier than diamond. CZ is extremely durable with a hardness rating of 8.5 compared to 10 for diamond.
Fun Facts about CZ
The procedure for transforming rough cubic zirconia crystal into a faceted, polished stone is virtually the same as for diamonds and other natural gemstones. Because CZ is harder than sand, CZ jewelry can be safely worn at the beach without risk of damage to the stone. Zircon is a much softer natural gemstone and is not related to cubic zirconia. Cubic zirconia production reached 50 million carats by 1980, and demand continues to grow.

The 2cttw size seemed a little large in the photo but in the question/answer it appeared as if the seller answered the question of sizing to be 2 ct TOTAL WEIGHT (So 1 ct each stud) even though other buyers stated each stud was 2ct each. What confused me is that the description is 2 cttw, which stands for 2 carats total weight. So I decided to buy that size since I wanted to see how large 1 ct in each ear looked like.
When I received these I was immediately impressed with the quality but knew the description was wrong. I should have listened to the other buyers and not the seller/description. The 2cttw earrings are most definitely 2 ct each stud. These are way to big to look real to me even though the quality is great. I also dislike that the posts are at the top of the earring so you cannot avoid having the earring droop beneath the lobe. So these are going back. I will purchase the 1cttw and update my review. I am hoping the sizing is consistent and those will be 1 ct each but only time will tell!
*** UPDATE*** I have not worn these much. Maybe a little over a dozen times. The gold has completely worn off and has turned into an ugly dark metal color. The posts as well, and they now really irritate my ear lobes and make them red and itchy. I clean the gold with specific gold jewelry cleaner and an very gentle so there is no reason they should have faded this quickly. Im sad :( Dropped the rating because after 12 wears, I have to throw these away.
The one carat size is just perfect for my ears and I'm adding a photo to illustrate that size on a woman's ear. I love the classic round cut with the four prong setting. Very sparkly too! The brilliance is comparable to that of diamonds. I don't think you could tell the difference unless you were a jeweler with a trained eye. I think the larger sizes look less genuine. The one carat size looks very elegant and is not at all gaudy or phony looking. I could wear them with anything from casual to dressy. You won't find anything else that looks this nice for the price!
They are very light and fit so comfortably that I have even slept in them without them bothering me. The posts are thin so you need to be careful not to bend them. I've been wearing them often and haven't had any problems with them. Although I have sensitive skin, I haven't had any problem with the platinum plated silver posts. They are .925 Sterling Silver, meaning they are 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper which is a good combo for durability while keeping the silver sparkly.
