Despite the romance, Emily writes Sterling as a strong female lead. Strength requires growth. Sometimes, the growth begins from a partner, an equal, who sees you as you really are, provides the balance you need, and reminds you of your true potential. Unlikely characters grow into themselves and grow together in this tale. When there is no one left but yourself, there is no more approval to seek. You have to listen to your own intuition that lives within your soul. Listen to your own voice.
Emily doesn't disappoint with a great opening line. This book starts hinting at what is happening when there no magic in the world. But why has this happened? How does magic return? And with those questions, you are invested in the next book in this magical tale.
"Mommy, can we go to the park now?"
"Sure, honey, let me just finish this page and we'll head out."
[15 minutes later]
"Are you done with your page yet?"
"Uh... Oh, the park, right. Just let me get to..."
Shame on you, Ms. Street for keeping me so engaged that I let my motherly duties slide.
But how could I help it? Each book explores a new facet of this wonderfully complex world. Sterling is a wonderful contrast to Leila and the Cedna. I love how "flaws" are presented. A character's weakness often proves to be her greatest opportunity once they learn to see it as such--and for Sterling this is particularly true.
I can't wait to see what perspective the next one adds! Meanwhile, I'll be sure to satisfy plenty of park time to earn me an escape to Lethemia.
