About the Author

Barbara McQueen took more than 400  photographs of her late husband, actor Steve McQueen, from 1977 to 1980. These poignant photographs document their three-and-a-half year relationship and establishes that McQueen had finally achieved the peace that eluded him for so long. The former model is now remarried to David Brunsvold, her husband of 15 years.  The two enjoy a fun and adventurous lifestyle, traversing the country in their decked out bus and stopping whenever the mood strikes them.  They divide their time between their Montana ranch in the warm weather months and head to western Arizona in the winter.

Marshall Terrill is a veteran reporter for The Chandler (Ariz.) Connection and is the author of 10 books, including the best-selling Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel.  He recently co-authored Maravich, a biography on the life of basketball legend “Pistol” Pete Maravich with Wayne Federman in 2006.  His newest book, Elvis: Still Taking Care of Business, was written with Elvis Presley bodyguard Sonny West and was published in 2007. Terrill resides in Tempe, Arizona with wife, Zoe.

The photos are lovingly captioned to reveal a metamorphosis in Steve's life while allowing us to see the fun side of this truly American icon whose passing is 28 years ago has not diminished his popularity. I know a lot of people have ripped on Barbara for writing this book- but it's not like she came out with this book 6 months after Steve passed; it has been 27 years since he lost his fight against cancer. Anyways, that being said, I loved this book and Amazon's price makes it that much easier to love! I know people are saying the written parts of the book suck- but I bought the book mainly for the photos of Steve w/ his airplanes, old toys, VonDutch items etc. Photos from Steve's last few years are very hard to find and Barbara's photos are beautiful. I also can appreciate her simple words about Steve throughout the book. I felt like she was talking to me one-on-one about how her parents felt about Steve, the age difference and the marriage etc. If you're a Steve McQueen fan you will not be disappointed with this book. Barbara is so adorable too... and there's photos of her in the front of the book as well. I think she and Marshall did a great job!

Nice coffee table picture book with an intimate edge provided by McQueen's last wife. Lots of insider pix which give the book the extra oomph it needs to put it above the others. Bittersweet read though as Steve passed so soon after. Sad to see all his rides being auctioned off these days. So few celebs trumpet motorcycles, even though he's been gone since 1980 he is still one of the biggest icons of the sport of motorcycling, especially the classic rides of yore. Great book with the just enough of an intimate portrait perfectly mated to great pix of Steve, his bikes, and his passion for motor vehicles.

I met Barbara in Jan 2011 at a book signing and found her to be a down to earth person, the type of people enjoyed to spend his time with. She didn't need his money and wasn't the "Hollywood" type which could be the reason they had fun together in simple ways. It was Steve that wanted to meet her and had people that were able to arange this. The last few years that they spent together seemed to be Steve's most peaceful times. To say the book isn't about Steve McQueen is not correct, it is about him and with pictures and stories of Steve & Barbara with "real" pictures of the King of cool taken by Barbara.
I enjoyed reading it and love the pictures!

McQueen is deservedly an icon -- one of the last Hollywood icons of a certain type: handsome and appealing, yes, but also a dynamic and individualistic adventurer.

This is a wonderful book -- an over-sized oblong hardcover with a zillion pictures of McQueen in color (with a few in b&w.) You get McQueen working and McQueen recreating, including a bunch of pictures of him with cars, planes, and collectibles. The passion he had for life is palpable.

However, what makes this book most valuable is that it is Barbara McQueen's personal view of Steve McQueen. It took her something like 25 years before she opened up this period of life to the world and it was well worth the wait.
