Steve McQueen in Le Mans, is not just a re-telling of the movie's story, but is a perfectly fitting and beautifully crafted tribute to the "King of Cool.”
Masterfully crafted by Sandro Garbo and the team at Garbo Studio, Steve McQueen in Le Mans fuses a blistering graphic novel with a bold and vivid tribute to McQueen himself, a man who gave new hope and meaning to car enthusiasts around the world. Inspired by 1971͛s iconic Le Mans͛ movie, which overcame its initial box office struggle to find true cult status, Garbo’s creation pays homage to the movie, its race, the cars that fired on all cylinders and the man who made it all possible.

This is a spectacular effort. The very large page size emphsizes the quality of the artwork, and the technical aspect is very good; even Porsche and Ferrari fans will find little to fault. There are a few scenes added that weren't in the movie; I can't say that they add to the effort, but they certainly do not detract. This is clearly a labor of love by Sandro Garbo and his studio. The magazine article that informed me of this book indicated that there will be an "Episode 2" but gave no indication when that would be. It took 3 years to produce this book; hopefully not another 3 years for the rest of the story!
Although Garbo's script attempts to fill out the film's characters somewhat, the cars and the racing are still the draw here. The book is massive (think almost bigger than "coffee-table" size), making it possible to luxuriate in the lovingly detailed mechanical drawings. Some of the pages, the dialogue scenes especially, conform to more or less typical shot-reverse-shot panel arrangements, but the book is undoubtedly at its best when it dedicates a half or a whole page to a single image. Pictures of the blue sky stretching out over the start line, or of a car pulling into the pits for service on a rainy night, are arrestingly beautiful.
This book seems to occupy a very strange niche, perhaps one that didn't actually need to be filled. But maybe that in and of itself speaks to its origin as a labor of love.
I took off one star because I would have preferred to have the entire story at hand.
