If I was Steve Miller, i would have been appalled with the way the record company edited down all of these great tracks. What the heck were you thinking Capitol? Every song is edited even the classics like "the joker" and "jet airliner". The best part of "jet airliner" is the awesome opening guiitar solo, well thanks to Capitol Records they edited most of it out.It sounds terrible.
Don't waste your money on this highly edited album.
If you want Steve Miller Band's greatest hits, I suggest you get
Steve Miller Band "young Hearts"-the complete Greatest hits.
Yes It might cost you a few bucks more BUT you get the full length versions of all songs and it is digitally remastered in stereo

Sure, it may have their greatest hits, but they aren't the full versions, most of them are shortened, including Jet Airliner, fly like an eagle, the joker, and others. You're better off buying the original albums, Book of dreams, Fly like an eagle, and The Joker.

You love Steve Miller, your vinyl is wore out. Why not get the greatest hits on CD? They put the old radio cuts on this release. "Take the Money and Run" is shortened. And "Jet Airliner" is censored. Did the producers think we wouldn't notice?

During the five year period covered by this album (actually six, since "The Joker" was originally released in 1973) Steve Miller recorded as many great singles as any American rock artist. His career peak is captured perfectly by this album, which contains nearly every Steve Miller song you're likely to hear on classic rock radio. What is surprising is the diversity of sounds. You'll hear everything from guitar jams, keyboard solos, country stomps and even a little blues. This album lacks only 1982's "Abracadabra" and a couple of late 60's classics like "Living in the U.S.A." Overall, a fine collections for those who want the peaches from Steve Miller's tree.

The Steve Miller Band has been around for a long time and continues to release new music today, even so their Greatest Hits 1974-78 album remains the best-selling and most popular album. 1974-78 may only cover four years of the Steve Miller Band's incredible music but the music here is some of the best and most memorable they have recorded (also some of the most popular I may add). It's just a great feel-good-relax-take-it-easy kind of album which is wonderful and diverse; Steve Miller Band is an experience, let's put it that way. If feel that 1974-78 capture great music from a very special era, the 1970's, what you'll experience while hearing this is a feeling I hardly ever get with today's music (and trust me, I'm young!). This is an album I've listened to multiple times alone, with friend and even with my parents. It's great for a sunny day or a rainy day, just any day really because the music here is uplifting and seems fit for every type of day/mood. Let's just say it didn't sell over 13 million copies for nothing.

"Springtown" is a great mood-setter for this greatest hits album, starts it off really well. "Jungle Love" was always one of my fav Steve Miller songs, so catchy it's hard not to sing along to this one. "Serenade" is a very laid back song, simplistic with cool guitar work and a nice chorus. Who can forget the memorable intro to "The Joker"? The entire song has great lyrics and is fantastic. "True Fine Love" is one of my favorites, excellent song, and simple with nice lyrics as always. "Rock `N Me" has great guitars, is insanely catchy and never lets you go. "Fly Like An Eagle" is like a trip back in 1970's itself, it's almost magical, a highlight for sure. And those are only a few of the songs on 1974-78; the rest is just as good.

Yeah, this is some of the best stuff the Steve Miller Band released. Yeah, it's on heavy 180g vinyl. However, there are shortened and radio edit versions on here, and the vinyl sounds like the engineer just transferred this straight from the CD. Nothing sounds full or lively. I literally have mp3's of this that sound better than the vinyl. There is no sparkle at the high end, vocals are weak, and bass is very subdued. Cool to have in my vinyl collection but not worth the effort of flipping sides for the sub-par sound.

"Greatest Hits" is good. No way is this the artist's best, though. I would definitely recommend each and every one of his albums before this. Yes, there's some edits here. Yes, "Jet Airliner" is censored. No, "Space Cowboy" and "Living in the USA" aren't found here. No, "Winter Time" was not a "hit". These factors make this a three star album. VERY casual fans will enjoy it, because most only purchase compilations. But if you want to dig deeper, but not buy every note (even though you should), get "Anthology". Don't even get the box set- its set list is way too confused, and the inclusion of several recordings made before Steve was a teenager does not serve the listener well. To the reviewer who said that Miller was the worst vocalist ever- I don't think so, and perhaps you should go back and ask yourself why this album is currently rated the number 800 selling album on amazon.com (this comp is a quarter- century old, and Miller hasn't had a legitimate "hit" since the 80's ("Wide River" doesn't count).
