I would buy this for the sextet

The "clapping music" is minimalist to a fault. The "music for pieces of wood" is a little less so, but still too much so for my taste. However, the "sextet" is Reich at his best and makes the disc worthwhile.

Rhythms that reverberate and are worth exploring

I bought the CD and it is supplied in a traditional plastic jewel case with an informative booklet. This contains program notes of the live performance with some introductory material and biographical details of the composer, Steve Reich, and the performers.
The CD includes 3 pieces- Clapping Music (1972); Music for Pieces of Wood (1973); and Sextet (1985) and these are arranged in chronological order which also reflects their degree of complexity.
This recording by members of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) percussion ensemble was captured live at St Luke's, London. The hybrid Super Audio CD layer includes stereo sound and 5.1 multi-channel mixes. I think that the CD sound quality is excellent and no less than you would expect from the LSO.
Clapping Music is performed by 2 people (who clap out of sequence) and I found that this version sounded a bit distant, almost as if the microphone was too far away! It was performed at a jaunty pace with clarity but lacked the warmth of the Works Nonesuch recording of 1987.
Music for Pieces of Wood is a piece that I hadn't come across before and is played by five performers who each have a block of wood which are tuned to different pitches. This music is multi rhythmic and phased which results in a rich pulsating sound, characteristic and recognisable of Steve Reich. I really liked it.
Sextet has all the elements of the earlier compositions but adds significant pitch and harmony to the rhythm and phasing basis of the music. This involves the use of four different percussion instruments and two keyboards. I found that this version sounded slower and more deliberate than previous versions that I've heard before, but I preferred this.
Who would have thought that a mainstream orchestra such as the LSO would record Steve Reich music? It is testament to the growing recognition for this innovative and creative composer who stood firm on his minimalist philosophy and created great music and influenced so many other musicians in classical and popular music.
