This is where Sticky Habits comes in.
This book has a great formula for, not only getting you to take action but, by doing just a little every day, and keeping the habit consistent over a period of weeks and months to follow, you can train your habits to stick no matter what is going on in your life. As the author teaches us, you don’t need to switch your whole life around to create positive changes: just five minutes a day performed with consistency can change your perspective and generate positive emotions from achieving something worthwhile.
As certified Life Coach Barrie Davenport states from the get-go: “Everything you want to achieve, every dream or long-term goal, can be broken down into a series of habits.” This is a profound piece of wisdom we have to remember to make any changes. I love this because it teaches us that, no matter how much education we have or how much money is spent on coaching or self-improvement courses, without the proper habits in place to back up your knowledge, you could end up taking action towards the wrong things.
As Barrie reminds us: “Most people have trouble with habits. And it doesn’t reflect a character flaw or lack of discipline. You just haven’t learned the method to make them stick.”
Sticky Habits is all about teaching that Method.
The course and method is broken up into six parts: Plan; Start Small; Use a Trigger; Define a Craving & Reward; Create an Accountability System; and Make Adjustments. Chapter 2 kicks in with choosing a habit you want to create. Chapter 3 gets into habits you should avoid at first such as: waking up early, quitting a bad habit, or habits you generally dislike doing. As Barrie coaches you along, she gets into the habits you should focus on while avoiding the ones that are more advanced and have a high probability of failure.
Chapter 4 explains the trigger habit and how we need to have a trigger response for your habit to form a strong bond. What I like about the way this book is written is, it comes up lots of examples. You feel like the author is taking you by the hand and “showing you the way.”
The 5 minute rule introduced in chapter 7 is perfect for most people. It cuts down on the amount of overwhelm. In this chapter Barrie stresses why the 5-minute rule is essential to habit development success. Then, as we prepare for implementing new habits into our lifestyle, there is a “Daily Habit Reporting Form” so we can keep track of how we are doing.
One of my favourite parts of the book is chapter 11. Here it dives into the science of habit building so that students/readers can understand the purpose behind why change takes time and consistent effort. When we understand the WHY, it can make the DOING more manageable. Chapter 13 follows up nicely with the emotional barriers to habit success and the negative resistance we encounter along the way.
The Bottom Line on Sticky Habits:
If you’re into habits and you are suffering [as I sometimes do] from bad habits robbing you of health, happiness, money, or causing emotional distress, this is the book you need to put into action. The “Sticky Habit Method” is easy enough to follow with clear examples, backed by the instruction and guidance of a certified life coach that understand the nature of peoples’ behaviour and what it takes to make real world changes. The book sets the tone for what to expect from the start, and it delivers on that promise when you stick with the program.
